The disappearing Signalbox

Heartland

There was a time whenever a journey was made by train in this area, the signal box was a familiar sight along the line. The mechanical signal box came into being when interlocking points and signals became part of the improved requirement for safety on the railway.

With the electrification and modernisation of British Railways, the power signal box came into being with many manual boxes closing in the process. Now the Power signal boxes are closing to be replaced by signaling centres in this post-privatisation age. New Street PSB closed on December 24th, 2022,

Some of the last manual boxes in the Birmingham area included, Cradley, Erdington, Four Oaks, Langley Green, Oldbury, Shirley, Stechford, Smethwick West and Stourbridge.

Erdington was replaced by a new signal box in a cabin across the line.
