This was originally called "The Talbot" and opened in late 1959.I worked there from shortly after it opened until 1964.
It was the first "new" city centre pub and became very popular, the "IN" place to have a drink before going on to the Locarno etc.
It had 4 rooms back then,a Public Bar,Smoke Room,Coffee Bar and a large Lounge, sadly I see it only has one now.

Hi Mickymoo,

I used the Talbot when it first opened to be honest I thought it was later than 59, I thought it opened more around the time the new Bull Ring Centre and Woolworths opened. Perhaps I'm wrong and I'm getting my dates wrong, but we used to go in the upstairs lounge where they had the buffet at lunch time. The only reason I remember it is because we took two Woolworth girls in there one lunchtime and they got the sack when they went back to work because they had been drinking.

Hi,it opened in Sepember '59,I was an underage 17 year old then, but got a promise of a job from the boss Frank Rushton, for when I became 18,which was six months later !
He was true to his word and started me on as a waiter on my 18th,part time, but gave me a full time position in the Lounge not long after. I probably served you and your Woolworth girls, shame they got the sack though ! Cheeeers !

Oddly enough a mate of mine has owned the Bull Ring Tavern for years now (Tony (Spud) Murphy), although I had heard that he had sold it or was thinking of selling it recently. I keep promising that I will get myself up there for a look, but I haven't even seen the new Bull Ring yet.

I haven't been in the pub for many years, but the last time I walked by there (last summer) I noticed that the licencee's name was female, can't remember what it was though !
