The Bull Price Street/ Loveday Street

Mike coincidentally I have had my £1s worth from the British Newspapers and found on 8 March 1834 one of my ancestors who had gone bankrupt was selling his stuff and amongst other things there was a dennet gig, which I didnt even know what it was until I saw your post.

hi carolina isnt it great that we are able to find these things out about our ancestors..they really can help to build up the greater picture of what their lives were like...bit more recent than your rellie but about 2 years back i found a snippet about my grandad henry harrington...at the age of 14 he left his home in hospital st and went to coventry to work in a hotel where he stole a ladies purse..he was hauled back to the courts in brum and when asked by the judge..did you take this purse?? he replied yes sir and i enjoyed spending the money...i know i really should laff but i just found it a funny reply....our dad never knew this about his dad until i told him and all dad said was...thats sounds about right..never knew my grandad but by all accounts he was a bit of a jack the lad..sadly died in 1948 aged 45..sorry to waffle on im always doing it..

Lynn I know going slightly off topic but earlier on in the year when it was£9.99 for one month with British Newspapers I found on my mothers side her father had saved someone from drowning in a canal.

There are two photos of Price Street taken from outside The Bull I should imagine. Although a lot later than you require I think they are possibly the nearest you are going to get to what you require. Perhaps the buildings are on the photos, but no longer recognisable as pubs.

2 great photos phil both taken almost on the same spot..definately the bull on the right and the building on the left is still there other than that its all gone now...on your first pic next to the building on the left i can just make out what looks like a couple of the old houses but thats about it...

thanks phil i think finding a photo of the black horse could prove difficult but will add to my list..

Below is a map of Price st c 1951, in which it can be seen that the position of the Black horse is an open space. I think both Phil's pictures are post 1951 (from cars), so it won't be on either of those.

mike thank you...i was just trying to work out from this older map if dairy terrace was almost opposite where the black horse was..looks like it was just to the left of it..i think..

Yes , I think the only terraces left in 1951 are those in court 11, just up from the Black horse .

just updated list of landlords post 1..need to check at library from 82 up until rose took over about 22 years back..

hi folks with the help of mikejee i am trying to compile a list of previous landlords of the bull for the present landlady rose as she would love to frame the list and put it up in the pub...this may interest our member katrina as her 4 x gt grandfather joseph showell had the pub from 1810 to 1827...what i dont know is if katrina knows that there were other members of the showell family who ran it after joseph showell...here is the list so far...after 1965 i will need to go to the libary to check the electoral rolls for the landlords...joseph showell was the first recorded landlord although it has been serving ale since 1729

ALSO I SHALL BE POSTING A PHOTO LATER ON OF THE BULL TAKEN IN 1935 AND ABOVE THE DOOR YOU CAN SEE THE LANDLORD IS GEORGE HERBERT QUIBELL....

JOSEPH SHOWELL 1810 TO 1827
WALTER SHOWELL 1827 TO 1833
ELIZA ANN SHOWELL 1837 TO 1839
THOMAS SHOWELL 1839 TO 1847
JOHN FULFORD 1849 TO 1876
JOHN FULFORD AND SON 1878 TO 1897
EDWIN EDDINGTON 1899
WILLIAM HENRY EVANS 1900 TO 1905
CHARLES W TURNER.....1908
TOM COLLINS....1910 TO 1915
HARRY AND EMMA BAKER..1916
ALFRED J LLIFF....1920 TO 1927
ALITHEA LLIFF..1930
GEORGE HERBERT QUIBELL...1932 TO 1949
LESLIE LEWIS NICHOLLS...1950 TO 1963
GEORGE MURRAY...1965
ROBERT R DYKE..1967 TO 1982..

I can sort out your post-war list - e.g. you'll have to scrub Robert Dyke as it was Irene who held the licence. This list is absolutely concrete ...
1949 - 1963 Leslie Lewis Nicholls
1963 - 1964 William James Sheppard
1964 - 1964 James Eivors
1964 - 1966 George Murray
1966 - 1982 Irene Louvain Dyke
1982 - 1985 Trudi Tiernan
1985 - 1985 Michael John Watkins
1985 - 1987 Geoffrey Anthony Robotham
1987 - 1989 Richard Martin Vincent
1989 - 1991 Frank Cyril Maltby
1991 - 1992 Verna Jane Williams
1992 - 1993 Stephen William Connor
1993 - Rose Ann McCann
Incidentally, Rose used to work for another veeeerrrry long-serving publican, Agnes Creaton, at the White Swan on the corner of Birchall Street and Bradford Street.
Cheers, Kieron

Well Kieron, perhaps if you manage to come to the meet your interest will be raised even more !
