It's not often you have the pleasure of announcing the opening a pub these days.
The Brown Lion will be reopening this Thursday thanks to the Two Towers brewery.
They are situated in Mott st Hockley.
I will be there midday Thursday for the grand opening.

The Brown Lion was my local from the late 60`s to the mid 70`s. For most of that time Barry and Dianne ran it. I remeber a lot of great characters from those days. darts was very popular. but not as popular as the card schools we had. It used to attract a lot of people. Although a lot of money was either won or lost, a lot of friendships were made. Me and my mates still talk about those days. Any one else got memories from araound that time?

Bilco,

I was a weekend regular at "The Browners" in the 70's and 80's and remember Barry and Diane Pugh very well. It was on the Friday-night crawl-route, when we'd all end up at The Saluatation for the jazz. I was on the darts team for a while. The place used to get packed some evenings. Do you remember the Bar Billiards table - my mate Grampus was red-hot at that game. The place went downhill after Barry and Diane left, and we stopped going. Shame.

Of course I remember grampus.(fellow villa fan, Brian Little our favourite player at the time) Me and my mates were only talking about him and other regulars around that time a couple of weeks ago. I agree, it was never the same when Barry and Dianne. Everyone seemed to drift away.

Will send you a PM, Bilco.

I spent a very pleasant couple of hours at the Brown Lion this afternoon.
Very impressed with it, a lot of work has gone into restoring it back to something like the pub of old, especially getting rid of that freaky exterior.
I was informed that the layout is pretty much as it used to be, there is no fancy decor or furnishings, it doesn’t need to have, in this type of pub it is all about what’s on the bar.
All it needs now is get the kitchen up and running and it will, in my opinion, become one of the stars of the jewellery quarter

Managed and staffed by ex employees of The Wellington in Bennetts hill, I think it has every chance of being a great success, and I would recommend that anyone that can, should visit it at least once.

Great range of beers which will be added to with guest beers as time goes on,
Pictured is the drink I tasted for the first time today, and has now become my personal favourite, Livery Street Mild.
My congratulations to Two Towers Brewery for saving another of our pubs, and wish them every success.

Hmmm, the old watering-hole is looking good, but the inside ain't as I remember it - it looks to have been substantially re-modelled and (I hope) improved.

Can you still park right outside, as in the old days? I ask, because I'm not very mobile at the moment.

Also, has anyone been down Constitution Hill recently and spotted if the old White Horse Cellars pub is still there? If so, what state is it in?

Thanks,

Big Gee

hi big gee as far as i know the white horse is still in a sorry state...

lyn

Hi Lyn,

Thanks - the last time I looked it was boarded up and derelict and looked like it had been that way for a long time. That was another good jewellery-quarter pub, when it was run by Jim and Mary Twigg, a great pair of characters if ever there were any. They used to have the occasional jazz-session upstairs, with the Artesian Hall Stompers amongst other bands. The pub was also very good for lock-ins!

The interior of the pub is still work in progress, but very good as it is.
And yes Bee Gee, I think you can still park outside, I can see those spaces being at a premium in the future.
