I've recently come across a reference to a pub called The Birmingham Arms which was somewhere in the city centre in the 50s and 60s. I've found there's a Birmingham Arms listed on Dudley Road at present. does anyone Know if this is the one or was there another Birmingham Arms at that time?

birmingham arms

Hiya Jerry
Yes mate there was another pub called Birmingham Arms, it was in Moat Row, which I think was near the Bull Ring by the market area.
Happy new year to you jerry and if see anything of Jimmy Worrall, give him my regards.

Thanks Postie I reckon that's the one I was looking for and happy new year to you and yours.
With your connections to Small Heath you've got to check out the post I've just put on the books forum, you'll love it
Catch you later
Give me a home where the buffalo roam and I'll show you a thick piled carpet

YOU HAVE JOGGED THE MEMORY OUTSIDE THE BOX. THERE WAS A BA ON MOAT ROW, NEARBY THE BULL RING. A LOGICAL NAME FOR A PUB IN A LOCATION OF SUCH IMMENSE ANTIQUITY.

B,ham Arms

Hi Jerryd & regards to Postie & hmld, regards this B,ham Arms?

My memory jogged & I remembered a Pub of that name :!: .

It was on Summer Lane, corner of Farm Street opposite Ormond St

Used to wait for my Dad there, Mid 60,s Bottle of pop & bag of crisps

Maybe this is the one you are looking for? Ok & best regards John

Hi John
That could be the one but I think it's more likely to be the one in Moat Row
as the reference was to the City Centre.
Cheers
Jerry

From the research I started last year, I found 3 pubs named the Birmingham Arms:
1 Bradford Street and 1 Moat Row, some directories listed them separately in the same volume, and one year listed different landlords, which doesn't speak well of the directory compilers, but no-one is perfect, not even me. The listings are from 1841 to after 1943
38 (ex 3) Dudley Road, Spring Hill, 1858 - after 1943
71 Hampton Street, 1841 - after 1943

Birmingham Arms

I am also trying to find the location of The Birmingham Arms, in 1810 a distant relative Stephen Allwood was arrested for breaking into the dwelling house of Thomas Brettell landlord of the Birmingham Arms. He was convicted and transported to Australia for 14 years. Apparently there is a book written about the family titled Convicts,Bushmen and Battlers an Allwood Family History. I would love any information.

Has anyone got a photo of The Birmingham Arms, Moat Row / Bradford St.
I saw a good photo on the Forum .....but can't locate where I saw It.:(

I'd forgotten which one I put on. Anyway the one on the forum is a better picture. Both were taken around the same time ( early 70s). You can see from the forum picture that they had started to destroy the area

I am sure that Lynnn (Astoness) posted a great image of the Birmingham Arms in Hampton St a little while back.

Re: The birmingham arms closed in 1971 and the market was built in its place and stands there to this day.

Hello.

I lived in the Birmingham Arms public house on the corner of Bradford Street & Moat Row, opposite the Drovers with my Mother & Father June & John Jacques, I attented the local Rea School. We lived on the top floor & our kitchen over looked the slaughter house. I used to ride on the Dumb waiter lift. Im sure I have some pictures of me, my mom & dog Rex some where :-)

hi

It was interesting to see that you lived in the Birmingham Arms Moat Row. I also lived in the Birmingham Arms with my family when i was a child, I do remember looking out at the slaughter house out of that same window. Could I ask what year you lived in the pub, I would also love to see some photographs if you have any. We attended St Catherines School.
