the beehive pub soho hill

well folks its been nearly 2 years since i last posted pics of this pub..as i had to be down the old end today i thought i would see if its still standing...some of the boarding was ripped off the front so i took some pics of what i presume was the bar..very dark in there but one or two came out ok..totally wrecked...this time i managed to get round to the back of the building and after clambering over a load of debris found the back door was kicked in so i went in a took a couple more pics..gives me no pleasure at all to say that i cant see the beehive ever opening again..part of the ceilings are are caving and you can see the sky and it has had a fire...not very safe to venture far into the building so i just took a couple of quick shots and got out quick..i did manage to find a keepsake..one of those heavy half pint pots made from thick glass...pics to follow

Lyn, what a very sad sight to see. As you know I lived a few minute's from the Beehive and in fact it was my Dad's local. I went to school opposite the pub. It looked so different in those days!

I am in contact with someone who used to live there as his dad was the licensee. I don't think he is on the forum but is it OK if I copy and send him your photos?

as some of you know the beehive is next to what used to be denisons watch and watch case makers so a couple of these pics will show the back of the old factory..

Nice photos they tell a sorry story, but I think it would still be possible to save it if they wanted to I've seen worse buildings renovated. I'd like to know who put the acro supports up in the bar because they hadn't got the first idea, for one they look over extended and the other thing is that they are not upright.
 
hi phil..i was just about to say go to post 15 pics 1 and 3 as they show the 2 supports in the bar..just showing my son and he said the same as you that although it looks and is in a bad way anything is possible..cant really see it though im afraid..for one reason its in an area that because of religious beliefs would not attract drinkers...so sad to see yet another of our pubs going to the dogs..

judy please do pass on the photos to your friend whos dad ran the beehive..could you ask him if he may have some photos of it in happier times to share with us...

Hmm, that looks well and truly trashed, Lyn, so bad that no has even bothered to cover the walls with graffiti. Seems to be quite a bit of dereliction around there, so other than demolishing and starting all over again, there isn't much alternative, sad to say. Such a shame that digital cameras did not make their appearance many many years ago. I have to remember Birmingham as it was over 50 years ago, and don't like most of the so-called improvements of recent years. But then we could say that about most places we have lived.

Thank you Lyn, and a Happy New Year to you and yours. May it be a healthy and peaceful one for all of us. At least Brum is reasonably safe from flooding as are we at 800 feet up! Poor souls on the coast are getting a real pounding.

My dad used that pub a few times, after his post round. Sad to see it in such a state, as you say a lot of Muslims living in that area and I can't see it ever opening again as a pub. Plenty of other closed pubs on the Soho Road if I remember rightly.
 
Lyn - I've heard from my friend who is still a forum member and saw your photos. He is going to try and find a photo of his Dad and customers in the bar if he can. It was posted before but was lost in the hacking.

View attachment 90545 Thank you to ASTONESS for putting herself into danger to obtain and then post photos of the present sad state of the Beehive pub on Soho Hill. To see a picture of what it looked like in earlier times and as JUDY and myself would remember, go to the first thread on this subject posted by ASTONESS on 13th Aug 2008 post No 4. I am pretty sure I have seen another photo on this site, taken around the 1930`s when the whole area seemed a much better place to be but regrettably it doesn`t appear to be available now. This picture shows some of the pub regulars before a Sunday morning coach trip out into the countryside which happened often in the early 1950`s. Thanks again to ASTONESS for the pictures and bringing up memories of the pub in much happier times. Allan
