The Anchor Benacre Street

My dad, Benjamin Fisher managed the Anchor from circa 1950 to 1953. He had been a local boxing hero and represented the Mitchells and Butlers boxing club prior to retiring; hence, like many former sportsmen, he found himself running a pub. I started my school days from the Anchor, attending classes at the Hope Street School, and remember that the Anchor and an adjoining, single house were the only buildings remaining of a terrace in Benacre Street after the German bombing raids. The bomb sites were my childhood playground. Ben and his wife, Ivy, moved on to manage the Cabin at Rugeley, the Hunter's Moon at Castle Bromwich and the Mitre at Stourbridge.

Here's a 1956 photo of the Anchor Inn, John.
