Dennis at least you could catch up on the news (even if a few days out of date )while residing in one of those. Dek

What a cracking wee thread, anyway, the last time i remember using one of the "old fashioned" type urinals was in 1974/1975,in Icknield Port Road(i love that name),not been down that way for many a long year, now living in Leicester, and have been since 1979.Any pics,or even information on if they still exist appreciated.
I used them on my way back to Balsall Heath, from Aston, after a heavy night on the bevy,s,and hardly any money left in my pocket.

We had a council semi (non parlour type) - none of yer common miskins and shared bog malarkey. Our lavvy was outside, but heated with a small oil lamp...I daren't mention what we used as bog paper....Rupert Murdoch might put a contract out on me.

dennis.i dont fib. i have a temple out side.next to the old brew house.that freezes up every year.i still use a hurricane hung on the chain.to
keep the frost out.

Well Pete, I can only suggest you swap the hard, sandpaper life in Pwhelli and come back to nice soft aloe vera impregnated Brew'us in Brum. I can even get you the Picture Post to read whilst you contemplate the Universe...

Hey Dennis how come you know so much about my body most of the gas comes out of my mouth. Down the bottom of the street turn left there was a Temple by the bridge in Holiday St don,t know if it,s still there. Dek

Think they have both gone. Can't see them on Google Street Map view. So much redevelopment around there.

Not forgetting those under the ramp in Stephenson St. The gents have been closed for ages (anyone know why?) The disabled can use the ladies ( I suppose that means men and women?). And where do the taxi drivers go now? MacDonalds?

Terry

Or these old beauties, tidily locked away from dek carr's mischief in Livery Street...

Mc Donalds is the closest. The signs on the closed gents directs you to conveniences in a shopping mall...that is guarded by an attendant collecting an admission fee. There was no way...no matter how desperate I was...Mc Ds became my temple of relief.

Nice one Dennis i,d forgotten that one shame they are all boarded up could be a life saver at times although you had to hold your breath while in them. Dek

hello.me thinks it is wrong charging folks to have a wiz.i went to a venue watching stock cars.they charged 20 pence for a wiz,in the very smelly plastic box.

I'm not sure if it's still there, but, there used to be one in Crawford St, Saltley by the canal. . Being female I often wondered why the men had to have so many places to relieve themselves. Why weren't there any ladies equivalent?
I'm not sure where to put this thread but monuments seems as good as anything!

The heading is nicked from the cast iron urinal in the jewellery quarter outside the station - see pics. These 'temples' used to be commonplace around Brum and I have several photos taken in the late 80s/early 90s.
It occurred to me that they have gradually disappeared over recent years (in line with public toilets generally). While the subject matter may not be very appealing I think the old Victorian 'street furniture' can be very attractive. I'm including things like street lighting, letter boxes, road names, bandstands etc.

I am aware of the urinals in the jewellery quarter and the one in Harborne by St John's. Can anyone tell me if there are any others around the City as I would like to photograph them before they disappear. Also does anyone have any old photos or scans showing these urinals which they could post?

Bob

Remember the underground ones? This was just up from Junction of Victoria Street and Bordesley Green on the left as you went to Town on the 53 or 54...useful for desperate Blues supporters after coming out of the Vic fully loaded...

I remember it well. Its not there now, but it used to be handy for the bus drivers. I used to use the 55 bus and I think it was the only place they could use. Can't think of anywhere else on that route.

Two faces of Public Toilets. Tram and bus Terminus at Bordesley Green East, opposite Denton Grove. Passengers alighted outside small row of shops, one of which was a Newsagents and Tobacconists where Den worked to get his pocket money in late 50s (included in google shot). Either end of shops were the Toilets for Men and Ladies. Photos nearly 90 years apart. Toilets long since closed for business...quite ornate and well built though.

Went for a meal in a cafe on Allison Street in Digbeth this evening (at The Warehouse Cafe), and saw under the arch of the railway viaduct, and old green toilet. But in front of it was some fences / barriers.

Next time I go around Digbeth with my camera, I may pop down Allison Street to grab some shots of it.

It is about here on Allison Street

Have taken photos on Allison Street in the past, but never saw the toilet there before (maybe was looking at the entrance to the Moor Street Car Park)

This is as close as I've got at the moment.

I only noticed it this evening.

There are three Birmingham urinals Grade 2 listed so they should be around for a while yet,
Allison Street.
Vyse Street
Court Road

If you didn't know it was there, it is almost hidden.

No problem. Seems like the other arches are being used for storage now,
