Can anyone help me decipher what my grandfathers occupation was on the 1901 census. The address was 20 Hamstead Cottages, Perry Barr. He is the bottom name.

My guess is Coal Miner Tubman Charge Hand, but I've never worked in the industry.

carolina i was just wondering if your grandad was working at hamstead colliery when this disaster struck in 18https://miners.b43.co.uk/hist-1898.html98

..luckily no loss of life but in 1908 28 men died in another disaster...if he was working there when either or both of these distasters stuck he was very lucky...makes you think dont it...

Lynn, Mike and Maurice many thanks for your help. I dont think he was there in 1908 as he was married in 1903. It seemed a funny vocation for him as on 1911 census he was a domestic gardener and then on he had a grocery shop which followed on from his father who also had a grocery shop. I apologise for the slight delay as I did try and reply earlier but it kept coming up updating software.

hi carol think im right in saying that hamstead cottages were for mine workers only....cant be sure if they are still there or have been demolished.
