Tamworth Road Kingsbury Road

This photo is dated 1904 with a location given as Tamworth Road Erdington. Wherever it was I would think the local residents would not be too happy about the City of Birmingham proposing to build a gasworks there. I cannot find a 'Tamworth Road' in Erdington so not exactly sure where this is.

well the sign says city of birmingham proposed site for gas works but i cant recall a tamworth road in erdington...any mystery to solve by the looks of it

A search on Google gave the following ...
Birmingham City purchased land in 1901 at Birches Green Erdington, for a new gas works. A public enquiry followed and the scheme received so much opposition it was shelved.

When was the Tyburn Road cut? Could that be the Tamworth Road, before it was made into a dual Carriageway?
It goes to Tamworth, and starts from Gravelly Hill passing alongside the site of the old Power Station?
 
Yes I do live on Birches Green. I have the same photo somewhere, sure it said Kingsbury road.
There nothing before Tyburn road, Erdington Hall was demolished for Tyburn road :(

So they changed their mind about a gas works and built Birches Green housing instead?

They usually sited gas works near canals or railways to facilitate delivery of coal and removal of coke but looking at old maps of the Kingsbury Rd does not seem to show sites which match the photo. We need the minutes of the public enquiry !
 
I can't find my photo but I do believe the carriage is turning into Spring lane. Posted by a smelly Birches Green resident.;)

Seems a likely match for the location. Maybe the owner of Birches Green House was the main objector at the public enquiry. It looks quite a large property.
 
Yes I remember Birches Green house when it was a ruin, had some happy hours playing in it. It was a 3 storey building about the same size as Rookery house.
 
thanks pedro...that throws things up in the air then..seems like there was a tamworth road in erdington after all..think we need a map showing it..

Cannot find Tamworth road in either 1900 or 1903 Kellys. However there is an Alfred Palmer listed at 33 Kingsbury Road !!
 
Got it no. Below is c1890 map which shows Kingsbury road marked as Tamworth road , though it is difficult to pick it out from the little trees !

difficult tell on mikes map where tamworth road begins and ens froth ..the birches green proposed site was shelve
