Can anyone help with this query please I have been trying to resolve. It is for a Sydney Vernon who I think died in 1968. He was married to Millicent Johnson and had two sons Sydney J Vernon and Ronnie Vernon. Also a daughter but again no trace of when she was born. The death should be registered for Birmingham. I would be so grateful if someone could find this out for and also the cause of death if at all possible.

if it helps if my memory serves me corectly at one given time they was living in ladywood [ king edwards rd ]
during the fifties opersite a church ;so there should be some think listed in the birmingham registry possible the old colmore row records ;
and they well be in storage of archives some where , best wishes astonian;

Thank you so much for that. Yes I think it is him as the age matches what I thought he should be compared to my parents who were in their forties at that time. Did you get any other names connected with him such as Ronnie, John, although I think his first name could have been Sydney and but he used his second name as his first instead. Also Millicent or Mary?

Karenw, because he wasnt born until 1908 and the last census we can look at online is 1911 I cant find any later information on him. You can go to Birmingham library and perhaps find more info for him. If you buy the Death Certificate it is the numbers that are quoted on my message to you. 9C 395. Best of luck

I can't immediately find any birth for a daughter but do you have a name for that daughter? The Vernon surname returns too many hits to be accurate, so the more information that you have about this possible daughter the better.

Millicent's death looks like it is:

You can go to the Registry Office in Birmingham to get all the certificates for the Birmingham ones but you would have to go to Lichfield for the death of Millicent. Alternatively, you can order them on line. In either case, it costs!
 
Hello, I'm sorry I don't know your name. Thank you so much for all this information, does this match with a Sydney Vernon being born in 1908 and passing away in 1968? It's strange about the daughter as no one ever saw her but were just told there was another sibling. Mary was mentioned but they were not sure if this was even her name or if she even existed? Have you got a private email address as there are some things I would like to explain confidentially as to what this is all about as I don't want to upset anyone?

Sorry, I totally forgot to put my name! It's Irene and although I am Brummie born and bred, I have lived in Scotland for over 20 years. Also, done extensive family tree for all of that time and more (got roots going back to rural Staffordshire and rural Oxfordshire in early 18th century and rural Kent in the early 17th century - and that's just MY side of the family, never mind my husband's!).

just to say i will be very intrested in you finding the questions to you finding the vernons
the more i think about it i am sure we are peaking of the same vernons knowing that i went to the same junior school as the family
and living in the same area and the same street i am sure i was standing outside there house on the day of one of there familys death
i can vizulize there house now it was a big white house with two or threes steps into the house ;
still bear this in mind and look what the others are coming up with but please bear that address in mind incase they was wrong this vernons was in kingedwaeds rd in the high nubers not far from the nelson strret school mid fifties if not before i met them but they was there in the fifties and sixties best of luck ; astonian;;

Do you have to know the exact date of when someone died in order to purchase the death certificate? I thought you could just put the code/reference you sent me for Sydney Vernon 9C 395 and that would be enough but it wouldn't let us do it? Unfortunately I do not know the exact date, only it was late May-June 1968? I was also wondering if you can look up old announcements ie birth, deaths etc that appear in the evening mail at Central Library. I take it these would be in the archive department if they have them?

Karen, on first form that you fill in, on the GRO site, near the bottom you are asked 'Is the GRO Index Reference Number known?'. If you know the code and reference you must check 'yes'. Later on you can then enter the codes an quarter date.
 
Hi Karen, this is the info and as you can see its the 2nd quarter for the death. Unfortunately, I really dont know about the info at the library as I have never done it myself, although like you I need to go as I am as far back as I can on Ancestry and the library is hopefully where I can find more info. Hi Michael, So do you think as long as I put yes for the GRO Index Reference number and the codes and quarter month and year, I will be okay? I just don't know the exact date but I know it is late May?

Thanks again for your help. How do you tell what quarter the person is connected with? (Sorry to sound a bit thick?) I thought the info was just telling you the person died between the beginning of April to the end of June 1968.

For the purpose of registration, the year is divided into four quarters:
  • Q1 covers registrations in Jan, Feb, Mar (sometimes called the March quarter)
  • Q2 covers April, May, June (sometimes called the June quarter)
  • Q3 covers July, Aug, Sept (sometimes called the September quarter)
  • Q4 covers Oct, Nov Dec (sometimes called the December quarter)
It is important to emphasis that this is when the birth, marriage or death was registered. In the case of birth and death, the actual event may have happened in the previous quarter; in the case of a birth, there is a window of six weeks to register the birth. Deaths normally only cross into the next quarter if they occur in the last couple of days of the quarter, or if an inquest is required that might delay the registration. In any case, it is always worth checking a later quarter - just in case!

So for example, someone who dies on 30th June will quite possibly be registered in Q3

To re-iterate what others have said, as long as you have the year, quarter, registration district, volume, page you will get the certificate. For you, these would appear to: Q2 1868, Birmingham 9c 395[TABLE="class: cms_table_p_resultTable, width: 100%"]

Karen, the information that you will have to enter will be the end month of the quarter which will, in this case be June. You will find it easy, there is a drop down list
