SWEET SHOP - Forster Street

Heath Street

master brummie
Hope I'm in correct place - My family - Osborne's/Hemmings - had a sweet shop in Forster Street - 1917 - 1949 - and wondered if anyone had a newspaper cutting/photographs of the street or shop - I think this is wishful thinking on my part? I never knew we were business people and into making a penny! Val

Researching - Osborne, Hemmings, Carroll

If this is the Forster St Vauxhall I remember it I used to use it as a short cut into town or Woodcock St baths I cannot ever remember a shop though but I can only recall all of the 50s Windsor St school was on the corner and the Barrack houses were opposite. The road is still there one of the few left in that area. Dek

Hello Dek and thanks for quick reply - I must admit I haven't lived in Birmingham since 1955 and being a child at that time have no memories of streets in other areas. Looking at the paperwork I have in front of me which I retrieved from the Electoral Roll on the Midland Historical Data it gives the following with ref. to 32 Forster Street. (44 Lawley Street to Windsor Street - here is Chester Ave,) then it mentions Adie Manufacturing Co. then 32 Forster Street.................Matilda Hemmings Shopkeeper - it could have 'perhaps' been a little shop that she ran from her house? This was in 1949.
I should imagine this will utterly confuse you, me I am already confused. Val

Hello Val yes I have the right St. but as you say many people used their front room as a shop and unless you went into buy something as a child you would walk past without noticing. Dek

Dek - yes you could be right, its only just finding out about this shop that made me think of all the goodies I missed out on! regards Val
