Sutton Road Erdington: large houses and their residents

This is the first time I've seen this 1937 OS map, which shows my grandparents' house 'Newstead' between 'Lyndhurst' and 'St Agnes Convent'. The house was built in the 1920s for Sir Frederick Smith, who built up a brewery business (Frederick Smith's Maltings) in Lichfield Road Aston, and was a longstanding alderman of Birmingham and first Lord Mayor of Aston. My grandparents acquired the house from his daughter following his death in early 1945, and my mother was married from there in 1948. As a bonus, here is a family photo:

The rear lawn was a full size bowling green, and out of sight to the left was a small bowling pavilion, where you could sit and sip your Pimms whilst waiting your turn!
 
Hi. I'm confused. Are the photographs mikejee posted above of Norelands House where Samuel Downing lived? or are they of Wilmott House or 98 Sutton Rd, Beechmount Hotel?

I think you are confused, I posted the photo on the other thread of the Lyndhurst guest house at no 78 , which previously had been the Norelands. This came from the earlier post on this thread

i take it the house has now gone ? also have you read post 28 as it mentions no 60? if you read this thread from post 1 there are lots of old photos of the old houses

I have been researching a man called Albert Ernest Penfold who was a director of Dunlop. He died aged 56 on the Merchant Vessel Siamese Prince. He was travelling as a passenger. He had been an ARP Warden and resigned after a year. He is listed on the CWG's site as living at 170 Sutton Road at Cranford House. I don't recognise the house name and wondered if anyone on the forum knows where it was please?

Apart from that it's a mystery to me why he would be on that ship - any ideas please?
 
Pedrocut, Thanks for the information. He died on 17th February 1941.

Imr31303 - not sure if there is any connection but quite an unusual name especially with the golf ball connection.

On 1938/39 eroll he seems to be at 107 Sutton Road.
107 was opposite Old Bell Road

this is 107 sutton road now cederwood care centre..hi pen are you sure he lived at no 170 as everything else seems to suggest he lived at no 107 ? as i am sure you know the siamese prince was sunk by an enemy submarine..maybe ernest was travelling on business as he seemed to travel a lot

on the 21 census he is living at no 15 firtree road erdington age 10 with parents...his dad was managing director at dunlop

Thanks to Lyn and Janice. I took it from the CWG site and I've noticed one or two mistakes which have come to light through this forum. The reversal of numbers makes sense - didn't think of that (!) I did think that they'd put a 1 in front but that didn't work. Sutton Road ends at the terminus. Thanks again,. Still don't know why he gave up being ARP Warden and went to the Far East

No - he went to New York in 1940 and died in 1941. That was, I think, the last entry I found for travel before his death. I wondered if he had trouble getting transport back.

That theory is wrong as he arrived back in April 1940. I can't find when he left the UK in 1941.

I am not sure where the idea of "Far East" came from. This clip is from an article about another person who died on the MV Siamese Prince. So Alfred was heading home from New York.
