SUNBAC Sutton & North Birmingham Automobile Club

This club appears to have morphed into a motorbike club in later years but in the beginning of the club's existence it seems to have been an car club. Not sure of much about it but would welcome any bits of information please. There seems to have been a rally in Sutton Park in the 1920's but nothing has been discovered other than that and no details of the rally either.

Many thanks,
Penny

Quick Look shows SUNBAC in existence in 1924. At the second annual dinner of the Sutton Coldfield AC in 1913, a member of the North Birmingham AC proposed a toast.

Penny, you may well have already looked but there seems to be a large number of images relating to SUNBAC online if you search via Google/Images, many of them pre-war. I don't know whether any/many of them relate back to a more detailed history of the club but one or two might.

Cars were certainly still involved in local rallies in the late 1940s/early 1950s, to my memory.

Chris

I’ve only just sen this.
I was a sidecar passenger for Barry Kefford who lived in Sutton (BKS Sidecars) We did many trial, sprints and circuit races together including some SUNBAC events. I have original programmes from a couple including Silverstone and Ragley Hall Park.

By any chance does anyone have the program of the SUNBAC Silverstone event from the 3rd of September 1960 and 2nd of September 1961?

Hi - I'm hoping I can post photos of a piece of memorabilia you might be interested in. My grandfather, H C Pickering, formed a company in 1912 with three colleagues, Sidney Darby and John and Gilbert Allday. They took over the workshop premises of Pickering Brothers and Darby in Bristol Street, Birmingham to produce a cyclecar, the PDA. It appears that 15 cars were made during 1912 and 1913, but in October 1913 the company was wound up and dissolved in 1914. My grandfather competed with the PDA in trials and runs, and in 1911 he took part in a non-stop reliability trial in a different car (unfortunately we don't know what this was) which was organised by the Sutton Coldfield Automobile Club. Presumably he completed the trial as he was given a medal by the Club, engraved with his name and the date which I'll attempt to show below. If anyone is interested in the PDA or has further information about it, please contact me.
