Summer Works - Tranters

Tranterline

Brummie babby
Hi there I'm new to this website so please bear with me. My husbands family line is the Watsons who married into the Tranter family. I have a copy of the will of William Tranter of Colemore Terrace, 318 Summer Lane and I have seen on one of the Tranter threads a map showing the Tranter gun works. I am interested in finding more about the areas mentioned in William's will that all seem to centre around Summer Lane. Various roads are mentioned in the will all within a small area Brearley, Hospital and Tower Streets, Caroline and Northwood Streets and Regent Parade. I am trying to find out where I can find maps showing the development of these areas including Summer Works, how I might find out what properties William owned and how his home became the Birmingham Settlement.

One ludicrously long shot is whether anyone has a picture of Thomas William Watson his son in law and one of his executors and/or his wife.

I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who thinks they can help with my puzzle.

Welcome Tranterline. If not already seen, this thread may be of general interest. There are a few views of the Settlement on it. Viv.

Again if not already seen you might be interested in this. Also the chances are there are various threads on the Forum available to you via a search about each of the roads you list. Viv.

Thank you I will take a look.

There are very few larger scale maps available pre- the 1880s which shown any detaiil. But here is one which shows Colmore Terrace c1839

In 1899, 318 Summer Lane was rented for the Birmingham Women’s Settlement and at time housed 5 residents. In 1906 the block of buildings of Colmore Terrace was purchased for £3,400.

And here is a section of the Pigott Smith map c1824 showing the terrace

thank you where were you able to find that information.

It can be seen in the British Newspaper Archive (subscription needed). Looking under 318, Colmore Terrace, Summer Lane after the death of William Tranter in 1890 it shown, in 1899, to be rented by the Birmingham Women’s Settlement. Then looking under the Settlement there is an article showing the purchase of the whole of Colmore Terrace in 1906.

1858 Colmore Terrace was described as well-built family residences including the foreground and carriage Drive, Gardens and building land behind.
