Summer Lane

#377 is a cropped version of #373. It's a good crop though and makes for a more interesting picture I think.

This may seem out of place on the Summer Lane thread but all these women were from Summer Lane and the surrounding side roads. They are on a Summer Lane Women's Settlement outing to Tewksbury in 1913.

not seen this one before..the barrel pub is on the left..

Loved reading this thread...
I am trying to find information about my Nan - Nellie Wills who ran a Florist's in Summer Lane late 50's ealy 60's.
From what I can remember it was close to Milton Street(maybe close to where Balwin House is standing now)
Many thanks...

One cannot look at these pictures of Summer Lane without feeling how sad it was that so much B'ham character was lost by the 'redevelopment'. I travelled along Summer Lane daily from the Ambulance Stn in Henrietta St, and the area now doesn't hold a candle to how it was.

hi gary if mikejee our map expert sees your post im sure he will be happy to look in the kellys directory to find out the exact number where your nans shop was on the lane and maybe post a map for you marking it out...considering the length of summer lane pics are quite hard to come by but im always on the lookout...i was born just off summer lane in paddington st so that whole area is of great interest to me...

Hi Regan
If it was was Grandmothers and uncles shop that you bought your cycles spares from the shop was mostly fruit and veg and a small space on the right for the cycle spares,I can't remember what was on the otherside of the road,I remember the chemist shop was on the corner of Cowper Street the next door was either the ice cream/sweet shop or the butchers that shop is pictured on post #381, granny was a bit further down at 179.
Pam

I spoke to a lady last week who lived on the corner of Cowper Street and Newtown Row. She told me about the bombings during the war and the devastation especially the school. She said her father would never go down the shelter. It must have been awful. She said how lucky they were as their house was never hit. The family name was Pursehouse.
