STURGES Sarah Streeton born 1817, Digbeth, Birmingham, Warwickshire.

Hello,

If a person is born in Digbeth, Birmingham, Warwickshire.... which church covers this area?

Sarah's parents were Samuel STURGES and Mary STREETON who married in 1816 at Foxton, Leicestershire.

Samuel STURGES, bc.1792 (place unknown) was a Grocer who was trading in Digbeth. Would there be any Trade records on him? Was he born in the Birmingham area?

Any help would be appreciated.

Barbara

But not in the 1823 or 1829 directories, so a bit short-lived!

Unless descendants of the couple have retained any papers, you will be most unlikely to find any other records of the business.

Thank you for the replies received.

Samuel Sturges(s) moved to London (Clerkenwell), but I am not sure when he left Birmingham. He was still in the Provision Trade. His son William Streeton Sturges was born there in 1925. As far as I know, there were just 2 dau. and 2 sons.

I believe the family might be Non-conformist.

Sarah never married.

Should you have said that his son was born in 1825 (not 1925)? I'm always doing that.

Hello claire-brum71,

I did not realize that Sarah Streeton Sturges was recorded in St Martin's records. I see it just notes the birth date.... is this an indication she was not baptised in St Martin, Birmingham, but only her birth details recorded?

On 30 June 1837, the above four births were recorded in the Protestant Dissenters' Registry (Registered at Rev. Daniel Williams Library, Redcross Street, Cripplegate, London). The STREETON is their mother's maiden name. Streeton has been transcribed as Straton in the Dissenters' Registry.

I had been hoping to find out more about Samuel Sturges(s). Did he have family in the Birmingham area? It would appear that he died before the 1841 Census, date and place unknown.

Sorry Barbara, it looks as to she wasn't christened there, but St Martins Church would have been the Parish had they lived in Digbeth, lots of my family over that side of the city used that Church as it is one of the earliest Birmingham churches. I had a look for Samuel Sturges(s) and could only find one in 1786 for Derby, as he married in 1816 given he could have married at as young as 16 he may have been born at any point from 1790-1800..... maybe even earlier, i am wondering as they only had a few children did his wife pass away or was she his second wife? It would help to view the parish entry for the marriage in Leics.

Hi Barbara,

There's a Samuel STURGESS born 1791 buried 5 November 1837 at St Peter & St Paul, Mitcham, Surrey at the age of 46 on the Narional Burial Index and his death does NOT appear on FreeBMD.

Hi claire-brum71,

Samuel's wife died in 1845 in Newington. The family had moved to Clerkenwell by 1825, where son John was born.

We cannot be sure who are Samuel's parents.... the records covering Foxton, Leicestershire are not that good :(

Thanks for your help.

Thank you so much. It could be our man....
I have some research to do.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place, but a BIG THANK YOU to all who have answered my queries....
