That was close to the corner with Adderley road south and not sharp on the corner.
Also the road names are the wrong way round for it to be the Britannia. See below on map c 1951

Mikejee, I’m new. Hi! I found this post when I was looking for info about my family from the 1881 census. The family above them on the census are at The Mermaid Inn, Lander Street. My family - the Sturdey’s are shown living at “The Lodge at Brown Jenislaw” (tho the writing is very unclear). I’ve searched for “Brown Jenislaw Birmingham” and can find nothing - I thought your map might help, but cant spot anything here either. Do you have any hints on where I go from here?! TIA

On findmypast it is listed as The Lodge at Brown Marshall & Co and the next family are the Denmark Inn, Lander St. The other side is no. 2 Arden Road. Brown Marshall & Co were a railway carriage and wagon builders.

On the map below, the black dot marks Denmark Inn, purple dot marks no. 2 Arden Road (next to the school) and as you can see the Britannia Works is a rail carriage and wagon works. So, there are possibly a couple of buildings opposite the school that could be the Lodge...

Thank you so much for this! I have been using resources on MyHeritage. Now you’ve told me it’s Brown Marshall & Co it is possible to see. I will update the resource for other potential users so really appreciate your info. And what an amazing map! Is this resource also available online, as I have so many addresses related to the many many Elston & Sturdy ancestors that I have from Saltley / Aston /Nechells census data that I’d love to know more about. Modern maps of Birmingham have changed to much since the 19th and early 20th century. Thanks for the help so far

I think Mike's conclusions are likely to be correct, but would also point out that on the larger scale c1889 map there is an Arden lodge on the other side of the factory , which in Kellys of 1882 (probably referring to 1881) is occupied by an Arthur Lewis Shackleford

This is great info and another wonderful map! As Arden Lodge is so far away from the other properties sandwiching the Sturdey's (The Lodge occupants) on the census, I wasn't sure initially. However, looking at the site, it appears that there's only the one entrance to the Britannia Works... and that is opposite the school, where Mike suggested the census order would take us. So I suppose any inhabitants of the site (including The Lodge) would be on the census in that order. Interestingly the Sturdeys have boarders living with them, so perhaps they provided some sort of accommodation for site workers? Lots to investigate. Thanks all.
