Stratford Road Shirley

That view in your photo faces away from Birmingham.
I am pretty sure that is it. A few older buildings on that bit of the Stratford Road.
There were other older buildings further back towards Birmingham but I only have vague memories and don't recall a shop.

The house in 1890 was described as a charming, gothic residence with garden over 3,000 yards.

(For info. There was also an 'Ingleside' on Shirley Road, Acocks Green - 1885 Frederick W Atkins was occupant)

I can see, from Janice's earlier photo's, there are letters inscribed onto a shield beneath the gable. I can see a definite 'J'. Could there be an italic 'B' which has been rotated too ? As this letter lies on top of the 'J', are we looking at 'JB' initials ? I expect this was part of the building when it was built.

Be great to find an image of it before it was converted into two units. The building has symmetry and I suspect there was once a nice central entrance to the property. The advert in post #448 suggests (at least to me) that there might once have been more decoration/decorative features than we see today. Perhaps the orginal, lower windows and front door were arched ? I think the use of the word charming 'gothic' residence to describe the house in 1890 suggests this, too. (But not over the top gothic, more restrained gothic perhaps ?)

I think this might be it originally (text across image as it is for sale but...)

The street-level frontage seems to have originally had a porch with pillars. Bit difficult to make out on the postcard, but I've sharpened it slightly. Screenshot_20260312_132800_Samsung Internet.jpg

Not a competition, but can anyone identify the location of this photo taken about 1920, anyone with access to a suitable Kelly's may be able to find a location of what seems to me as a shop named Metcalf Pharmacy and a Wrensons store.
It was understood to be in Kings Heath, but I cannot connect it to anywhere in the area.
Any suggestions why the bunting would be up (end of WW1)

There was a Wrensons in Dads Lane, Stirchley. But, to be fair, I am sure that there were many more elsewhere in Brum

An expanded 1926 description of that in post #35, shows it was still a residential property. It mentions an out-office, so there was probably already a business run from the premises. By the 1920s, it had a garage too, so someone living there must have once had a motor car. (Could this owner have been the surgeon in 1905?)

The advert seems to make a point about the various mod cons. Probably was/had once been occupied by a modern family/person.

In 1925 a Mr Tim's, Builder was living there (or working from the address). He was seeking to employ carpenters for a long job near Olton Station. (Source: 9/11/1925, Birmingham Mail)

These shops in Shirley (link below) look the same as the ones in your picture.

This view below is near Staples office supplies, the Plume of Feathers pub and St James church.

They have similar vertical wooden slats just below the roof.

Also if you look at the FIRST picture I posted above (attached again below), the building at the rear of the picture (side view of building) looks the same with the small window.
I haven't followed the whole thread, but the 2 buildings (Sydney Mitchell and the one to the left of that were Suffields back in the day, I can only go back as far as the 1980's with my memory of the area as I grew up in Shirley from 1980 onwards but have always been local to there with Cheswick green and cranmore as other areas I lived but Shirley was always where I went at the weekends etc and so I remember Suffields well(can't remember if it was the one shop or both, pretty sure it was both, it was a decently sized shop and was one building at the time if I remember correctly). I can't see the original image you linked so I hope I'm not talking out of turn,y answer is related to the 2nd Google images link. Just trying to help.
