The day it rained skeletons
An incident recalled by my father (Ray Bate).
It was in the early 1940's,there had been another air raid over Brum. Time to go and survey the damage with my father-Arthur- who was recruited into the National Fire Service. Walking hand in hand down Bordesley Green towards the Atlas pub (i think the pub was where the Blue nose statue is now). we just approached the Cattle rd and Garrison lane junction when BOOM there was an almighty explosion. The shockwave knocked us both on our backsides." Bloody hell" my father shouted "i bet that was a jerry bomb". We ran down the road and to our astonishment the road, the buildings and the rooftops were covered with bits of skeletons. The nearby churchyard had been hit, previously, and the bomb had just decided to go off. I will never forget that sight as long as i live. Just imagine if we had set out five minutes earlier.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Has anyone heard this story or can anyone put any meat on the bones....oh dear i didn't say that did i?........
Am i correct in thinking the church could have been St Andrews?
I would love to hear your comments. ( i don't think my dad has gone senile, yet:biggrin
