I remember the Golden Eagle really well and also chatted to Steve Winwood and the rest of the Spencer Davis Group. They also used to play at the Digbeth Civic Hall and my pals and I couldn't get over the fact that Steve was only 15 and had the best voice we'd ever heard, and we were 16 and in awe. Coincidentally, the Spencer Davis Group played here in Vancouver last Saturday evening and I had my photo taken with him. Spencer is the only original left now and they use separate band members to play in North America and Europe.

Incidentally a fellow choirboy at the time was Stevie Winwood, who went on to achieve fame in the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith, the latter group including Eric Clapton.

Hi Nick,
Re St John’s Church Perry Barr

wow, one of my musical heroes!! I used to regularly see The Spencer Davies Group when they were the resident band at The Students Union at Birmingham University in the 1960's. Stevie Winwood had (and has) the best blues voice I have ever heard in a white man. I have the cd of him and Clapton performing in New York a couple of years ago, and he's as good as ever. We went to see Spencer Davies play with The New Animals at Tamworth Assembly Rooms about three years ago, and he's also as good as he ever was. I think I saw every band that Clapton played in, with the exception of Blind Faith and Delaney & Bonnie.

Sorry to go off-thread.

So you must have been at GB school when Stevie and Muff Winwood were there. Stevie W would have been there from 1959 and Muff from I think about 1954. They both went to my junior school Cranbourne Rd/Kingsthorne Junior). Viv.

I went to Great Barr Comp in 1958, having passed the 11+ as I lived outside the area. I knew Steve Winwood well, who was in the year below me. He lived locally in Atlantic Road, and it was him that has given me a life long appreciation of the Blues music. I did not know Muff as he was much older, as was Martin Shaw, who also went there. I used to go to Mothers in Erdington in the late 60's where his band the Spencer Davis Group played a lot.

I used to know a lot of people on the Birmingham Music Scene, and mixed with the likes of him plus John "Ozzy" Osbourne, Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan etc. Carl Chinn published an article I wrote about John Osbourne in his Brummagem magazine in January 2017.

Hello there,
just seen Stevie Winwood at the Coronation Concert. Does anyone know where he was born in Handsworth?
Thank you - George

Wikipedia seems to suggest that the family moved from Handsworth to Kingstanding after he was born, however his parents are listed at 70 Atlantic Road from at least 1945er onwards. And they are there on 1939 register.

His grandparents lived at 465 Park Road from 1920s onwards.

I’ve read in a couple of places that he was born at 127 Church Lane, Handsworth.

I don’t know if that’s accurate, maybe somebody on here could use their skills to do some digging to try and verify it?

stevie winwood was born in 1948..reading post 2 his parents were living at atlantic road kingstanding from at least 1939 and was still there in 1945 and beyond..maybe someone could tell us if his parents were still at this address in 1950

On Wikipedia Mervyn (Muff) is listed as being born in Erdington (1943). He was registered in Sutton Coldfield.

Definitely there in 1950. My mum knew Steve and Mervyn's mum. We too lived in Atlantic Road. She knew her through Cranborne Road (Kingsthorn)Junior School.- my bother and I went there. My brother was in the same year as Steve - so started in the infants school in 1953. Don't know if he went to nursery there before that. The family was still living there in the late 1960s, possibly early 1970s.

I seem to remember (albeit vaguely) that Kingstanding was at one time given an Erdington address. I also vagely remember some phone numbers had an Erdington code (ours was 373). Viv.

Thank you all for info about Stevie, I appreciate it.
For me it was a trip down memory lane after the concert. I used to deliver newspapers from the George Edwards news agent (Ex-Aston Villa-footballer) in Church Lane when I was at Rookery Road School.
Thanks again

When were you at Rookery Rd School?

Yes, two of my cousins were there at the same time as Steve Winwood, he was a bit younger than them but they remembered him as he played the piano.

Remember seeing Steve Winwood aged 14 being introduced at the Elbow Room by the band - presumably the Spencer Davies Group but not sure.

I know at secondary level he went to Great Barr Comp. Viv
He definitely went to Cranbourne Road infant and junior school. I sat by him two solid years straight year 3 and 4 before we all went to senior school.. You’re correct about Steve Winwood going to Great Barr Comp, and you had to live the correct side of Kingstanding Road to go, and Atlantic Road was on the correct side. I guess looking back it came under Oscott so would that be classed as Kingstanding.
