Somehow got to this great forum today.
I lived on Bordesley Green East (road in Stechford) from 1953 when I was 1 year old to about 1964 when the family moved to Marston Green.
I remember so much now having had my memory shaken by these pictures and comments.
I went to the primary school in Albert Road, played endlessly in the 'Dell' and went to Blakesley Hall a million times. My best friends were David Stokes, George Dads and Gillian Robinson all in Bordesley Green Road. Oddly, I went to an art school in Stockland Green and caught the No11 there which took ages.
I remember the baths being built and all those shops too on Station Road.
My mother (Doris) took me many times to the YWCA with many others, and as kids we went to the cinema on Saturday mornings where an organ player came out of the floor in one corner!
My father (Neville) had an allotment opposite the house which is now a housing development from the early 70's and my older sister (Susan) married at Yardley Church and lived there for a while.

The Stoke's were a large family, 4 children, Susan, David and 2 younger ones.

At Albert Road school I remember Miss Lomax who literally changed my life by me passing the Art School Exam and me going to Stockland Green Bilateral in Stockland Green instead of the comprehensive in Cockshut Hill.
I owe her a lot!

I have been back for a walk-about a few times over the years and found it very depressing to be frank, nothing like I remember it at all, but times change indeed.

Moving to Marston Green was a wrench, I caught the No 11 to Stechford Station or to the No 14 bus stop from school and went to home via Kitts Green for several years.
My apprenticship was at James Booth Aluminium in Kitts Green in the early late 60's.

I met Gillian again about 30 years ago working for her mother who was then an Osteopath.

My mother, Doris, died this year at 103 years old!

What a memory trip this thread has been.
Thank you to all who have contributed.

Graham.

Great story Graham & welcome to the Forum, enjoy!

Hi Angela,

I used to live at 47, one of the large Victorian houses three doors from the school. My mother used to buy hair ribbon from the shop for my hair and I remember being mortified when my grandmother told me to go there and get some knicker elastic!
Do you remember Margaret Oakes who lived in Morden Road and who also worked for Tommy Deering in the office?

I recall visiting Francis Road about 18 years ago and it was definitely past its best.

Hi, did Margaret have a brother called Paul? We played football down the park and Paul was an absolute brilliant goalie.

My sister ran Brownies there for some time but after your time I think. My cousin Elizabeth went to Brownies and Guides there and was also in the church choir. Do you remember Avis Mann, Mrs Mann's daughter? She was more or less the same age as I was. There were several boys in the family. My mother became involved in the Guide movement and became a commissioner. I think it must have been via my sister and well after my time in the movement. I was married by then and had moved away. Do you remember a blind lady called Mrs Ward? She had a daughter who I thought was beautiful. She had long blonde hair. I think they lived in Mary Road. Mrs Ward used to do the Sunday School at All Saints. How I hated going to Sunday School. Nothing to do with the organisation; I just preferred the normal church services.

We too went to the YWCA for PE from Stechford Primary. I agree that the walk there and back was the best part.
Mrs Wards daughter was called Lois

Hi batmadviv (and Angela!) I'm really glad I found this forum (researching my family online!) and was hoping I could get some info from you all. My mother was Judith Oakes, and my gran Margaret Oakes who worked at Deerings on Albert Road (I didn't know this until I read your post!).

They lived at 7 Morden Road. I'm not sure of dates, though my mum was born in 1952 and was friends with the Tabberer sisters Anne & Jillian. I knew Anne as a child, she used to take care of my grandad after Margaret passed away. I would love to know more about my mum and Gran's life - Margaret passed away when I was very young though I remember her as very jolly and always smiling though she was unwell, and Mum died of MND in 2008.

She didn't talk about her childhood much, so I never really knew her background, though we used to visit Stechford every year when we were at school throughout the 90s. Haven't been back for years, though I have fond memories of the River Cole bridge in the playing fields (where we would play poohsticks!) and trainspotting at Stechford station with Grandad. I remember panting up all those steps as a kid!

Here's a picture of Margaret and a souvenir from Deerings. I have lots more photos I can dig out, and I'd be happy to share them if anyone is interested.
