The Staggs of Birmingham appear to be a closely related bunch, EVery Stagg in Birmingham in the 1841 Census is related. Is there anyone else out there investingating?

Not related but i see from LDS that William and Nancy Stagg only had the 2 sons John and William baptised Birmingham and that William snr married Ann (Nancy) Harding in 1805.
It may be that William snr came from a different county to settle in Brum, there appear to be plenty in Staffs.

There's a couple of Stagg families on the 1851 census,

Thannks for that. Yes in 1841 the only Stagg families living in Birminghamare John and William lilving next door to each other so that it's nice ot say that I am related to every Stagg in Birmingham in 1841. There are just some problems further on and It would be helfpul to find what other members of the family heard. Ive worked out where William (father of John(1806) and William (1808) has come from but I can't find out what happened to Ann (Nancy)

Re: The Staggs

My husband is a Stagg. Apparently a JOhn Stagg was a convict sentenced for stealing brush wood. He came to Tasmania 1836 and served 7 years. he left a wife Mary Smith and 3 children in Surrey. He married a second time to Catherine Crick. His son Charles came as a bounty migrant to Australia. Any connections with your people? I am new at this.

Re: The Staggs

Post Office factory, Garrison Lane circa 1943 a Charge hand on the Teleprinter section was named Stagg, can not remember his first name. Len.

Re: The Staggs

hello saxonw,
are you still researching the Stagg family of Birmingham. Im related to John Stagg born c1837 who was son of William Stagg born c1808. John was married firstly to Eliza Hart and then Mary Baker nee Nolan.
Ive just come across your thread from 2007.

Re: The Staggs

If it is still of interest. Mary Baker (nee Nolan) was the widow of James Baker, they were married in Manchester, he was a private in the 7th. Dragoon Guards and subsequently posted to India where he drowned in River Indus. They had one son James, who after Mary's marriage to John Stagg appears in the census as James Stagg.

William Stagg, father of John and William, (the neighbours who lived more or less where Ladywood Middleway stood, when I was last there), may be the William Stagg recorded as buried (age 44) at St. Mary's Whittall Street on June 24th 1827. His residence is given as Staniforth Street.

Hope this is of use.
Regards

Re: The Staggs

Hello Calico,
Thats kind of you to pass on that info, I have gradually gathered alot of that info. are you related to the staggs too, you seem to have alot of info on them. Do you know anything about William Stagg Seniors origins or anything more about where in Ireland Mary Nolan is from?

Re: The Staggs

My maternal great-grandmother was Mary Nolan/Baker/Stagg so I guess I am a half-Stagg! Patriarch William just seems to appear at his marriage. There isn't any one before him that I can find, though a lot of the parish registers and non-conformist registers are in the City archives and not generally available. It's interesting that at about the same time another Stagg - Thomas ( a fishmonger), has his son, also Thomas baptised at St. Martins (b: 3rd. May 1806, bp: 29th, May 1806). There is also a record of a Thomas Stagg being buried on October 30th. 1806 but it doesn't say whether father or son. I would guess father because the father's name is usually mentioned when a child is buried. Perhaps William and Thomas were brothers up from the country. My current favourite for William is a William Stagg christened at Easton Royal, Wiltshire on 27th, April 1783 which would fit nicely with 'our' William. There is another born in Shipsdam, Norfolk who is also possible, I haven't found a brother Thomas for either yet.
Mary Nolan's father was James Nolan (or Nowlan) a miller. He is apparently living when Mary married james Baker in May 1853 but had died when she married John Stagg in May, 1862. She was 21 in 1853 according to the marriage certificate and there is, in the 1851 census a Mary Nolan, servant to the Stead family at 18 Derby Street, Cheetham. Abraham Stead was a Wesleyan minister and Mary's place of birth was given as Ireland, Kildare, Staplestown. I haven't found a James Nolan, miller there but I haven't looked recently either.
Hope this is of interest

Re: The Staggs

Dear Calico
So your a descendant of Mary Nolan and James Baker via their son James John Baker? So we are far distant reli's. What happens to James john after the 1881 census when he is living with Mary and John? I lose him after that. I found the death of James Baker in the Muster Roll were you able to get a death certificate for him?
I am a descendant of Mary Nolan/Baker and John Stagg via their son Robert. Mary and John are my 3 x Grt Grandparents.
I found what I thought could be Mary Nolan in the 1941 census in Slaney Street Birmingham with father James and mother Margaret and brothers James and Michael. I found a possible death for James Nolan in 1847 in Birmingham, the occupation here is Labourer though not miller as in Marys marriage cert. I assumed he was dead by Marys Marriage to James Baker as I couldnt find him iin the 1851 census.
As for the Staggs as yet I havent managed to venture back past William and Ann Hardings marriage . The Thomas you suggest as a possible brother is interesting. I had come to the conclusion that William senior had come to Birmingham from another county.
I wondered if you would be happy to email me.

Re: The Staggs

Hello Gemma
Our relationship might be closer than you imagine. Robert Stagg, son of John Stagg and Mary Nolan was my Grandfather. He and his second wife Clara, my step-grandmother lived in Palace Road, Small Heath for many years and kept a shop there for a time. They were bombed out during WW2 and eventually moved to South Yardley.
Regarding James Baker, having found his death I haven't gone much further since he isn't in the line I was pursuing at the time, it was a matter of confirming that Mary was a widow and not a bigamist! I don't think military deaths overseas were recorded by the GRO then, though no doubt there is a 'proper' record somewhere.
I can't find a brother Thomas for William but the village he was born in seems to be populated entirely by Staggs and there are at least two named 'Thomas' born around 1780 who could be the Thomas in St. Martin's register. So if not brothers then perhaps cousins.
I'm afraid I don't have anything on the Nolans, and very little in the way of memorabilia on the Staggs, my parents weren't hoarders and I've moved about a bit in the meantime.
Look forward to hearing that we do indeed share ancestors, though not I'm sure, generations!
I would be happy to correspond direct and you can contact me initially at [email protected]

Calico
