Greetings one and all - I've not been here for a while so I hope you are all well.

Just a quick question that I didn't know whether to post in the Genealogy section!

I am researching some ancestors called Brittle. They appear to have lived mainly in the Kings Norton/Moseley area of Birmingham, but I've come across a Voters record for 1868 for an address of 66 Stafford Street, St Mary's Ward (which appears to have been next to St George's Ward) and wondered where it was as Google maps show a Stafford Street in Walsall (which it indeed might be).

If it is indeed the address in Walsall, then I know I can discount the address as being linked.

Stafford St used to be where James Watt Queensway is now, approximately from Dale End to Aston St.

I'm thinking that it still isn't my ancestor as I don't know if a man who spent most of his life in Kings Norton, would suddenly be in that neck of the woods at the age of 74.

I can't currently find him in the 1861 census - there seems to be a lot of misspelling of the surname, but in 1851 he is in Sun Street, St Thomas, I don't suppose MWS, you know where that is?

It is possible that the Joseph Brittle living in Sun St 1851, died in 1859. Also he appears to be living on Brewery Lane, Deritend in 1841.
 
1871 census lists a Joseph Brittle b1830 Bham, and family, living on Stafford St. So I'd assume it was him in 1868.

In 1881 he is in Yardley, listed as a retired milliner.

MWS - I really don't know about his date of death. I am looking at him on Ancestry and other people interested in the family have him dying in 1894, when he would have been 100yrs old - possible but I think unlikely, there also appears to be no provenance to the 1894 date of death.

Your suggested year of 1859 seems far more likely.

He is my 3rd great grandfather.

I don't think it's him as all the info I can find out about him - assuming that I'm looking at the right man, he is a bricklayer.

I would say the Joseph Brittle of Stafford St is definitely not your Joseph Brittle.

The age of the Joseph Brittle who died in 1859 is given as 65 which is slightly out but slight variations are not uncommon. If it wasn't his wife who registered it, they might not have known his exact age.

I agree, although it would be great if it were him as I just don't think him being 100 when he died is probable.
Oh well, I'll just keep mooching.

If your 3 x great grandfather was the Joseph Brittle, son of Edward & Elizabeth baptised 3 Aug 1794 Kings Norton then the age on the 1859 death is spot on.

I believe him to be the son of Edward & Elizabeth, born in 1794... I'm as sure as I can be.

I will make a note of his date of death.
