I am looking for the marriages of two relatives, namely:

Ellen BEWES/Frederick Oliver SHUARD, 1926, 4th qu.
Sydney BEWES/Elsie Jean WATSON, 1929, 3rd qu

I thought possibly St. Stephen's as a sibling was also married there. Is it possible for someone to find this marriage? Unforatunately, I don't have an address as the family only moved into the area after the 1911 census and I am definitely not up to speed on the Birmingham area. Any help will be gratefully received. Thanks,

Jane

Thank you for your kind reply. Funny you should mention Newtown Row as that is the street given when one of the other siblings married! I'm now trying to get up to speed on knowledge base so I appreciate your link. Another one of them was living at Blakeland Rd. when he died so I'll have to have a look for that one as well. Once again, thank you for your help.
Cheers,
Jane

Hi Bo,
Thanks bunches for the great info! Helps me narrow down areas to search. Can I be cheeky and ask if you might look up a Cyril PENNINGTON with his wife Doris and a Randall W. JONES with his wife Jean. Both the wives are from the same BEWES family. Don't bother if it's a hassle. I do appreciate your help, Bo and thank you again.
Cheers, Jane

Hi there

I have been to the Birmingham reference library this morning. I meant to take your note with me re St.Stephen marriages so that if i had time i would have a look for you. When i got there i realised that i had forgotten your note. Going on memory i thought that you were looking for a couple of marriages 1925-29, but i couldn't remember the names. However i came across a marriage for a Thomas Cross and a Mary Bewes. The name Bewes rang a bell. On the 27 December 1926 Thomas Cross, 32 year old widower and a polisher of 3/308 Newtown Row married Mary Bewes, 24 year old Spinster and a plater also of 3/308 Newtown Row at St.Stephen's church Birmingham. Thomas's Father was also Thomas (Cross) a filer. Mary's Father was Charles Bewes, deceased. Thomas and Mary signed the register, as did the witnesses Charles Cross and Louise Barratt. I couldn't see any other marriages during that period for Bewes, however i will double check when i go back to the library next week. I have a copy of the above marriage certificate. You are welcome to have it if you want it.
Regards

Steve

Hi Steve,
Thank you so much for thinking of me when you went to the library. Unfortunately, that is the one certificate I already have... (bummer). I am actually looking for a sibling as well as other BEWES relations for the following dates:

Sydney BEWES/Elsie Jean WATSON, 1929/3
Ellen BEWES/Frederick Oliver SHUARD, 1926/4
Stanley Charles BEWES/Dorothy Ivy RAY, 1936/3
Doris BEWES/Cyril M. PENNINGTON, 1935/2
Doris BEWES/PENNINGTON to David HARRIS, 1948/3
Jean BEWES/Randall W. JONES, 1947/1

I simply don't know where some of them lived when they married as they moved into the area after the 1911 census. Possibly they joined other relatives, but hard to confirm.

It is an unusual name and not from Warwickshire.

Anyway, I appreciate your thinking of me and look forward to hearing from you again. Thanks,
Jane

I am looking for a picture of St Stephens New Town Row. I believe the church was demolished in the 1960's. My gt grandfather and his siblings were all baptised there in 1863. I always have trouble with this family as the family name is Yates. My great grandfather was born about 1851 and died in 1895. According to his obituary he is buried at Aston Parish church but I have never found the record in the church registers. I am now wondering if it was in fact St Stephen's. Any help would be great.

Re: St Stephen's New Town Row.

Wendy. my grandmother was a Yates and I know from previous exchanges that we are not related, I have a number of details of Yates who are not my family, this is one of them, Elizabbeth Catherine Yates, christened 14th November 1852 St. Stephens, Birmingham. Father John, mother Ellen Yates.

Re: St Stephen's New Town Row.

Thank you Mike and Lyn great pictures.

Sylvia I have checked my tree and yes Elizabeth Catherine Yates is mine. Her father John Yates was my gt gt grandfather's brother so Elizabeth was his niece. John married Ellinor Taylor often known as Ellen. I now must check more into St Stephens records. Thanks for the help.
