Hi,

I have just received a marriage certificate with St Pauls Church, Aston on it. date is 1889, can anyone tell me if this is Aston Parish Church or was there another St Pauls in Aston?

Thanks Michael, I'd looked on the Astonbrook site and thought the windows in St Pauls and the arches down the centre of the church looked the same as Aston Parish, which as i'm sure you already know is St Peter & St Paul.

I wondered if because of limited space on the marriage cert they would just put St Pauls.

On the other site it says St Pauls Birmingham, which i think is the jewelry 1/4.

Hi,
Lozells Road would make sense as addresses were Clifford Street and Wilton Street and in 1889 that area would have come under Aston (I think). Do you know if the church is still there?

It was there about 18 months ago so I imagine it still is. I think it was some sort of community center the last time I saw it

Mand, I have looked through my records and found this, the wedding of a great aunt. As you can see it is recorded as St Paul's Aston. As they lived in Clifford St and Lennox, I had assumed it was St. Paul's Lozells Rd, but now you have made me think. I have information on Birmingham parishes but unfortunatley it is in store.I've tried to look up information on the internet but keep getting the Council site which is down until 2 o'clock. I will try later, unless one of the forum members spots this and can clear up the matter.

Just had a thought. It says St Pauls Church in the Parish of Aston, NOT St Pauls Parish Church. So, does that mean Lozells?

Thanks for the replies.

The map is great - you can really see how close St Pauls, Lozells is to Clifford Street.

Obviously a road of jewellery trades - if i read your cert properly - does it say silversmith? my Ggrandfather was a gold cutter and lived at 115.

Certificate defintely says St Pauls in the Parish of Aston. I now think it must be the oneon Lozells Road.

If it's any help, I got a Marriage Certificate for a couple married in St Peter and St Pauls and it was listed as Aston Juxta.

thanks Harborne, think that probably confirms it St Pauls Lozells :) and definately not St Peters and Pauls.

Hi

I have various relatives who used to live back 67 Clifford Street from at least 1918 until 1954. Most married at St Pauls, Lozells. I visited last year to photograph streets around this area for my family tree and this is one of the only Churches in the area still standing and is still in use. In quite a small area there were many churches including St Edwards and St Georges which are now demolished.
regards

lou.

I've just found these two photos of Gower Street School that I took in 2003 from the corner of Gower Street and the remaining bit of Guildford Street. In the first one you can see St Pauls in the background

I took this without realising the family connection. When I studied my family tree I found St. Pauls popped up alot, then I identified the church un a map. If I'd have known i'd of taken more photo's!

love all the photos. i think thats one o the best bits of searching out the past - seeing places that great grandparents etc lived. I found myself on the train the other day, going towards New Street, thinking which bits would have been there, what would they have seen. fascinating.

Hi Mandy
Nice Modern Pic Of The Church, And I Know You Are Urgentlly
Seeking The Right St Pauls Church and There Is Some dEBATE As To
Whether Or Not Its The Photographic One Or The Aston Parish One
Well I,m Sure This Was Told To Me ,And Also I Think It Was About Two Years Ago That Aston Parish Came Under Salford Which In Many Years Ago
Just Before My Time ,And I,m Sure Carl Chinn Saturdays Paper Article Did Covered This Story About Aston Parish Church Was Named Previously
Named As Another Church Which I Think Was St Pauls ,And For Some reason,
Or Another The Salford Which Sticks In My Mind Was Due To The Fact That Around That Particular Time In Gone BY 1800,S -1900,S The Lichfield Rd And The Salford Bridge Area Was Known As Salford ,And Then Of Course As Time Moved On In B,HAM The Districts Started To ChangeAnd Then The Church Became Aston Parish Church
I Should Have Known About The Aston Parish And Its History, Being Christend There And Being In The Church Choir There For Many Years ,I Was ThereIn The Forties And The Fifties And The Orinanal Vicar Whom Name I,VE Forgotten Became The First Cannon Of B,ham ,Oh Well , I Do Not To Ramble About It AT The Moment,But I Would Like To Say I Think I WOULD Put My Money On Aston Parish Rather Than Lozells ,But Any Way Our Boffins Will Find Out From The Archives Around 2-30 Today ,
Incidently The Perks Lived At No , 18 A Big House In Sefton Rd B,ham 16,
I Went UP Sefton Rd Yesterday BEST WISHES ASTONIAN ,''

Thanks Michael. No sign of a marriage on family search, seems the Hintons were very good at avoiding any official records in the 1800s!, i will put on my list of 'look ups' for when i go to the library.
