Hi FolksMy husband lived at 7 back of 8 Hick street, Dan Smith. He remembers Miss Gittins. Says a lot of children (including him) would have gone hungry if not for the jam sandwiches.
To the left of their entry was the green grocers, to the right the grocers/general stores and remembers a Fish and chip shop in either belgrave road or Highgate road. he remembers Christine Holdback and Nicholas Holdback. Dan left Hick street abt 1962, he then went to Clifton road school.
any photos old or modern would be most appreciated
Welcome to the Forum Nick! A great place, enjoy!Hi Folks
I came across this site very recently in a St. Patrick's school search and low and behold someone remembered my name,
I'm Nick Holdback. My sister Christine lives in Warstock now which is where we moved to in about 1963/64 I think, when they knocked everything down, great fun on the bomb pecks till then. I joined the Merchant Navy when I was 18 then emigrated to Australia at 20 and I still live just South of Adelaide. Dan has got me going about the chip shop, I can remember the inside but the location is not coming, I'll ask my brother Mike he has a memory like an Elephant.
I recall all the yards up Hick St. and I'm just recalling another family, the Farrells David, Michael, Bernadette and their mom June, I think they lived up the same entry as Dan, top house on the Right.
Anyway Thanks for having me on the site, it's been so nice to hear the names and places of the very important formative years, they were great times, no money but lots of fun.
Thanks Superdad3St Albans Church, Highgate has a brilliant website including a Parish Heritage Trail. This may be of interest [copied from the site.]

"Once past the Alms Houses, turn right into Pentland Croft. At the end, follow a footpath heading between the 1960s Wilmcote and Brinklow Tower Blocks, to reach Upper Highgate Street. Ahead, to the left, the red brick building ❸ behind St Patrick’s Centre for Community Health was St Patrick's church school. Built in 1933 to replace an earlier school building on the same site, it closed in 1983."

Hi do you know anyone called smith there my mom is looking for her sister who lived there with her husbandHi Annie
Yes i remember your brother Tony - we were in the same class at St Patricks. Never got as far as Mrs Pughs class but i remember Miss Gittins and Miss Sherwood. During advent miss gittins used to have loads of candles on top of the cupboard at the side of the classroom which she would light for a few minutes every day, she used to bring in bunches of hawthorne berries for us to look at and read Heidi and Heidis children to us. Miss Sherwood was SO strict - but I loved her. I lived in Beale Buildings in Frank Street - long gone. I was in Balsall Heath a couple of years ago and the school building was still there - though no longer a school. St Patricks church is long gone too - do you remember the steps going down from the school playground into the back of the church? i have a photo taken in the playground during the coronation celebrations which i will post if I can work out how. My names Elaine, surname used to be Short
