St. Mary's Church, Selly Oak

All male! How things will almost certainly have changed in the subsequent fifty years. Attended friends wedding at this church in March '64.

That should have been '65

The church, Grade II listed, was completed in 1861. It's at 925 Bristol Road, Selly Oak, and still approached via an avenue towards the lych gate. The lych gate no longer has gates.Screenshot_20260809_121408_Chrome.jpg

My family has a long history with this church.
My parents got married there in 1952 and as a boy scout I attended the wedding of the group Akela (John Moody - 1st Ariel pack) and his wife Barbara in 1966/67. We formed a "Guard of honour" with the rest of the group/pack as they left the church. My mum used to go there often in the 80's and was very good friends with the vicar at the time - John Waterstreet. John married my wife and I in 1985 (we are still going strong) and at that time the litch gates were still there. My grandads service was there in 1987. Sadly, I made the long journey up for mums farewell 3 years ago. The current vicar knows nothing of John Waterstreet so maybe no records kept. I can confirm that 3 years ago, the litch gates had gone however the inside of the church was still as pristine as I remember but doubt I will need to go there again as all my family have now gone. The church was always well looked after and clean but sadly kept locked and bolted due to vandalism.
