St Mary's Church Aston Brook.

Mogmeister

Brummie babby
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if St Mary's church at Aston Brook had a church yard , and if so what happened to the remains when the church was demolished.

Mogmeister.

Seems doubtful that there were burials there, not much room so if there was there wouldn't have been many. It was consecrated the same year as Witton Cemetery. Map from 1890...

Can see her on the 1939 register on Lichfield Road with parents, Thomas and Annie (nee Prescott) Hughes.

In 1921 listed at 63 Saltley Road.

All other children appear to have a registration but can't see one for Edith. There are baptisms for 2 siblings at St James the Less.

Possibilities would the registration was overlooked due to the war, she was the illegitimate child of one of her 'sisters' but even the eldest seems too young or she was unofficially adopted.

I thought that maybe Ellen Hughes might be her mother, checked all Hughes/Hughes birth Dec 21st 1917 according to 1939 census.

is there any parish records i can look through

There are baptisms for 2 of Thomas and Annie's children at St James the Less, Ashted in 1908, so that's where Edith may have been baptised but the online records don't go up to 1917, so you would have to go the Library of Bham.

There is no guarantee she was baptised there though.

Here is map of Saltley and the surrounding area from 1909. Pink dot marks 63 Saltley Road and the green dots mark the 4 closest churches. Top centre and possibly the closest is St Catherine's, on the left is St Matthew's, the right is St Anne's and the furthest away bottom left is St James the Less, where 2 of their children were baptised.

and no guarantee that she was baptised at all..i have rellies who had sisters and brothers baptised but they were not..its a shame that birmingham bapts dont go up to 1917 where as other parts of the country do

I did spend hours at the library going through all those 4 churches mentioned searching for a baptism which wasn't there.

Some Bham baptisms go up to 1922, not sure if that is to do with the 100 year rule, most other places on Ancestry seem to go up to about the same time.

It looks like I will either have to visit the library one day. I might write to the churches you have mention, if she does not have a birth certificate I would of thought they would of had her baptis.
