Eric that is such a lovely painting. I love your interpretation you are so clever.:)
 
I seem to remember the trees being a little taller in the 50s so maybe a bit earlier than that. Anyway nicely done indeed. The scene seemed right when the church was a centre piece of the little area. Now the church seems like an exhibit...almost as though it is intruding on the set...from that angle anyway.
Maybe if we come back as architects in a second life...we can put it all back the way it was.
 
Rupert, as you say the Church once dominated the area, as it should and now looks out of place. Being born in 1930 I can remember it when it looked like this, I might be an old fuddy duddy but that is how I liked it.
This painting is a 15" by 11" pen and wash, a practise piece to iron out any problems, as I intend to paint a larger pure watercolour at a later date as requested by my sister, I have to do a bit of research on colour and details for buildings flanking each side the Church also pondering whether to make it a winter scene with snow, would make a nice Xmas card !!

Great rendering of St. Martin's from a different era. I have always liked that scene and especially the building behind the church. There used to be a bookshop in there. I would like to know more about that building...name, etc, history, etc. I passed it everyday on my way to my job in Upper Dean Street. I wish the building was still there.
 
Jenny, I believe that the building behind was s front piece and offices for the old market, it also contained a hotel. There are some lines and pictures about it on here and I will try to find them. Goes back to dirt roads I think.
 
I think that the date of the original must be older than has been mentioned so far. This must date back before Midland Red used the area as a bus station which to my thinking must take us back to WW1 era
 
Jennyann, I too loved that building, a mixture of red brick and teracotta if I remember right, always wondered what it contained.
Have attached another of my many Bull Ring paintings also showing the same red building, a more recent era. Eric
