St George's Church Newtown

i was just looking at a map dated 1944 to 1974 showing st georges rectory in tower st (the building is still there) but then i remembered i had seen a photo dated 1904 also of st georges rectory on hockley hill..clearly they are 2 different buildings and i just wondered if we can find out (maybe through the newspapers) how long the buildings were used as st georges rectory (didnt think they would have 2 at the same time so maybe they used the one in tower st after the hockley hill rectory was demolished..again i dont know when that was)...below is photo of the one on hockley hill...the map showing the one in tower st and todays st view of the one in tower st..thank you for any help...i am just curious

I don't have access to all directories but...
1915 lists the vicar at 142 Hockley Hill.
1921 no longer lists 142 (141, 141a then 144).

cheers jan that looks to me as though the rectory moved from hockley hill to tower st...most likely it is where mom and dad went to arrange their wedding at st georges church in 1950

In 1921 the vicar of St George's is listed on the census as a "boarder" living in Villa Road - perhaps suggesting there was no rectory.

I think the later St Georges rectory is on a site similar to St Nicolas's rectory, and possibly St Georges vicar etc used St Nicolas;s. But St Nicolas's disappeared from directories after 1939 , being absent in 1940 and not listed. Therefore I think the later St Georges (which only appeared between 1950 and 1955) must be a different building to the St Nicolas building.

I did wonder as the footprint looked different. Perhaps the land was owned by the Diocese so they just transferred its use?

I always thought it a bit peculiar that St Nicolas vicarage was next to St Georges church, and St Georges was quite a distance away

It is always difficult to find a place in the rate books, but it would seem to me that, in 1911 at least, the rate books for the north side of Tower St start at no 5. Would that indicate the church owned 1-4?
