St Chad's Birmingham Parish Records

Steve Crathorn

master brummie
I believe that i am right in saying that the Birmingham Reference Library do not hold the parish records for St.Chad's. Has anybody any ideas as to where i can get a look at them/

Thank-you

Steve

Thanks Jennyann.

I have just found this as well on the Birmingham Reference library;

We do not hold original Catholic registers. The majority of these are held at St Chad's. Contact the Rev. John Sharp, Archivist, Cathedral House, St Chad's Queensway, Birmingham B4 4EU. Tel: 0121 230 6252

So this looks like the route to go.

Just to let you know about the problems I encountered trying to get
marriage & baptism records from Saint Mary's RC Church in Wrexham,
The records they hold are not available for public inspection, the charges for the staff to do research at your request is as follows "look ups" are £5.00 each baptism or marriage up to a maximum charge of £25.00.

But in I did find the service extremely quick & efficient, but a word of caution
on marriages, do not expect to get a full certificate as in a C of E church or register office marriage, Oh, and the ones I received were in Latin...

As an aside, up to a certain date, didn't couples marrying in a RC church also have to have their marriage vows confirmed out in a C of E church or register office?

Would be interested to find out how Saint Chad's RC church handle requests for access to their records ! ! !

Steve, looks like you are making good progress in searching out the records you require. These days there seems to be a trend towards charging for this kind of information. I think that there are a lot of enquiries and that's why there is a charge.

Thanks to all who have contributed so far. I had heard about the possibility of "Latin" transcriptions. I am actually trying to locate a copy of a marriage certificate for a John McCarty to Maria Barton registered in the Dec 1/4 of 1838 registered Birmingham. John was born in Ireland c.1816. A daughter of theirs', Agnes has her baptism of the 13 Aug 1848 at St.Chad's listed on the IGI. There is no listing of John and Maria's marriage on the IGI and i was assuming that it may have been at St.Chad's.

I have e mailed the Cathedral asking about viewing their records, but they have not answered back yet.

Well i've got an appointment to visit the St.Chad's archives department at the church tomorrow (Wednesday 9th December). This will be a new experience for me but i hope to find out a few things! ;)

Sorry for the delay on the update. I visited the archive records at St. Chad's church. It is very well laid out and a lot of hard work has gone into the room's presentation. If anyone should ever want to visit i can assure you that it is well worth it. There are a mixture of records in English and Latin. All very interesting.

Hello Steve. Don't suppose you saw any news of my parents whilst at St Chad's. Did you meet a Father Martin Pratt, there - he is another cousin. Miriam.

Hi Miriam

I didn't find anything on your parents but i was pushed for time. I think that a copy of their marriage certificate is needed from the Birmingham registry office.

Unfortunately i did not meet Father Pratt.
