Could anybody tell me where about in Deritend St Basils Church was & if it is still there. My great grandparents, Alfred Bick & Alice Twittey were married there in 1912. I would love to see a picture of what it used to look like if there is one available. Also was it used for burials ? Thanks.

Laraine,
As far as i know St Basil's still stands on Heath Mill Lane but last i heared it was a boot inn for the homeless. From memory i do not think it had a churchyard but i could be wrong.

:) :) Thanks Jacqueline & Cromwell i might go and take a look next time im there. So its on Heathmill Lane ! That makes me smile because ive only recently found out that my great grandparents at that time were living at number 77 so i guess they had no problem in getting to the church on time ! I bet its nothing but businesses along Heathmill Lane now.

It's quite funny to imagine my gt grandad probably propping the bar up every night if that was their local boozer ! Ive passed there many a time but have never been in. Isn't Heathmill Lane where Birds Custard was or round about there somewhere ? ;)

can anyone give any info on st basil church, deritend. i have found reles who were married there in 1915. (have searched the forum and the church sub section but found nothing). don't even know where it was.
thanks,
steve.

Any help?.

Little more on the Church from British History online site:

56. ST. BASIL, Deritend (Heath Mill Lane), originated as a temporary church opened in 1886. A parish was then assigned to it out of St. Peter and St. Paul's, Aston, but it was not consecrated. (fn. 45) The parish was enlarged by parts of Holy Trinity, Bordesley, and St. Andrew's, Bordesley, in 1896. (fn. 46) A new church, designed by A. S. Dixon, was consecrated in 1911: (fn. 47) it is a low rectangular building of red brick with a north-west bellcot, in the Byzantine style. The benefice, a perpetual curacy from 1904, and a vicarage from 1907, was in the gift of the bishop; in 1939 it was joined with that of St. John, Deritend, to form the united benefice of St. John and St. Basil, and the two parishes were merged. (fn. 48) The temporary church in Heath Mill Lane seems to have continued to be licensed for public worship until 1926. (fn. 49)

many thanks all,
all the info recorded. am i right in saying that st basil's homeless project, currently in heath mill lane, is where the church was situated?
steve.

Steve

A very poor photo of St Basils, and it is as you say currently the HQ of the homeless project. It still stand today in the completeness of that photo anyway.
