Hi everyone:) does anyone know when the Tower of St Albans Church Highgate was erected I know that when the church was built they did not have the money for the tower and that it was put on later .. but does anyone have any idea when:)
Thanks Maggie

According to Roy Thornton (victorian buildings of birmingham, it was built in 1938 by E.F.Reynolds

Thanks Mike..I know that it was the second St Albans ..the first was on a corner not too far away.. it was one of my regulars at the club today that said when they built the church they did not have enough money for the tower and that was built later so I am trying to find out for him :)

Sorry Maggie, i didn't make myself clear. I quote from Thornton: "It is of 1879 -81, designed by J.L.Pearson...........The south west tower was not added until 1938, by E.F. Reynolds"Mike

Quite a few of my family were baptised and married at St Alban the Martyr, the big church at Highgate. Can anyone tell me if there are records held there, or indeed anywhere, for the 1800s?

My brother, the former Rev M H Bryant, was incumbent of St Albans from about 1995 to 2002. It is/was a beautiful Victorian church, and was used regularly by the BBC for recordings of choirs and sacred music, as the acoustics were perfect. As I recall, the grounds weren't all that extensive, but back in those days certainly needed a good deal of attention. Is it still used for worship, would anyone know?

Here is St. Albans` website for info: https://www.saintalban.co.uk/ Looks like they are still having concerts and are fund raising also.
Big Gee- Your brother Rev. M.H.Bryant is mentioned on the site under Vicars.

Thanks Jennyann. I was ten years out with the dates my brother was there! A slip of the memory! Whoops! Good to see they're still holding concerts - we went to several when my brother was there.

A former reverend of the church was a 'close relation' of Shackleton, the explorer. He too was well travelled.
