Springhill Ice rink Summerhill Road

Hi, Nishja,
I think I asked the name of that pub I used to tiptoe over to from the exit by the shop and I think someone answered but I can't remember it. You can see it on Streetcam looks a bit sad these days and isn't a pub now. The only blonde ice dancer I remember was Dianne Towler.
You can see her dancing on the British Pathe film site.
One thing that did happen to me one night, was in the centre of the ice, I accidently brushed against a pretty ice dancing lady and a clip on my belt caught her short skirt and pulled it off her.
She was left standing minus skirt, with me about 10ft past with skirt hanging on my belt. Caused a sensation in those days.
I skated back red-faced to give her skirt back. I remember her name was Shirley, somewhat older than me, and later she was quite gracious about it...

Hey Phil, yes that was her, I could not believe my ears. There she was this pretty little blond lady, yelling at the poor guy like a sailor. Of course I know a few more of those words now but at the time, no, and certainly not from the little lady. I will ask the all knowing, all seeing, he will remember the name, as I was told yesterday he had forgotten NOTHING, scarry... :) gotta find me a happy face Oh one just turned up on it's own, how neat is that
 
nishja, at least you have theWINTER OLYMPICS to look forward to Can not wait to see what CANADA has to offer the rest of the winter sports world.
 
Hi, we have lots of snow and ice, cold winds, snow and did I mention snow. All of which is good for the Olympics, some of the races and skiing I will watch from the comfort of my lazyboy. I am watching the tennis from Australia (summer) at the moment seems like a better idea than looking out of the window or brushing the snow off my car. I'm afraid I don't remember that much about the Barons, can you please jog the memory bank a little, what years, some names please and thank you. :)

Got your email about Bill Robbins phoning you. I knew him very well. There is a picture of him on this forum in the thread 'Where was your first holiday'. He is the person to the right, looking out to sea at the back of the centre pic in my post #63. I'm at the front right. He would remember that great camping holiday in Combe Martin. In my post #79 in the 'Springhill Ice Rink' there is a pic showing his Uncle Frank. He is 3rd from left front row.

Phil, He gave me an email address but like John Edwards It just bounces back I have tried a number of combinations but no luck? Told him about this site & to look out for this thread so hope he finds his way here !
 
Keith, There was another pic somewhere on the forum of Frank Madely with his wife but I can't find it. It wasn't one I posted.
I don't know why, but I seem to find searches on the forum more difficult than they used to be.

I know the one Phil, I remember I showed it to ART hambidge & he said it was taken at Richmond ice rink? There is another team pic which Frank is on.one of the first postings.

Oldmohawk i dont think ant body has answered the question regarding the pub across the road from the rink being a Ladywoodite i have the answer it was The Summer Hill Tavern

I've being thinking hard to remember that name. I used to drink M&B Export ale on my tip toes to it from the rink. By the way, I believe the rink was actually the 'Summer Hill Ice Rink' because Spring Hill finished at the Library - but I might be wrong.

Summer Hill Ice Rink,Yes Phil you are right thats the name i recall reather than the one given on this thread ,but we still have a fantastic TREAD GOING so whats in a name LOL
 
Summer Hill Ice Rink was on the corner of Goodman St just up this road was Willmot and Breedon and opposite Willmots was Goodman St rec where when we were kids we used to play there

Even I call it Springhill Ice Rink now, and to me it was just the old ice rink, shabby in parts of it, but a place we had fun in and now have good memories of.
I should have remembered the name of the 'Summer Hill Tavern'....:rolleyes:
The parents of the Grinsell brothers who raced in the Mohawks ran a pub up the hill nearer to the city centre, I think it was called the Shakespeare Inn.
When we use to train on Sunday mornings, we used to go to a pub in the Jewellry Quarter on a corner near a clock.

Phil your old grey cells are still in very good working order, it was in deed the SHAKESPEARE that Eric & Brian's Mom & Dad ran. saddly Brian is no longer with us RIP
As you say OLDMOHAWK a place of so many very happy memories never to be forgot.

That name sounds very familiar. You're doing a good job reviving my memory. On Sunday mornings I used to go up there from the rink on my BSA Scooter, sink a pint or two, and ride home. A bit irresponsible, now I think about it....:rolleyes:

I've just found the photo of Frank and I believe the lady in the pic was or became his wife.
I notice Frank is wearing speed skates, and those curtains look like the ones at the old rink..

Phil I do wish Bill Robbins finds this site,I did tell him to come on down & join us but Ido not see him yet.I did a silly thing in not getting his phone No , as I have said I did have an email address but he must have given me it wrong as I have sent a no of photos & they have bounced back.
May be he will get back to me some time?
were did you find that one of frank?
 
Keith - Hopefully Bill will join because he's already 'on' the forum in the 1954 holiday photo of 'Brummies' at 'Combe Martin', and I have other photos of that holiday. With regard to the photo of Frank, I thought it was on the forum, but searched and could not find it. I ran my desktop computer today where I have copies of all the ice rink photos and found it. Perhaps you could email copies of the 'email addresses' to me and see if I can make anything of them.

I've registered on here as I've noticed you mention Brian and Eric Grinsell. Eric is my Dad! Yes my Grandparents did run the Shakespeare and Brian died around 20 years ago now. My Dad is now 70 and keeps in touch with a few skaters - Ken pendry and Dave Boddington etc. He married Christine Neal (who you may also remember from the ice rink). I know he would love to know who is still around and to see any old photos you may have.

He is not really that computer savvy!

So pleased to hear from you, I've put quite a few photos on showing your dad Eric, and the others you mentioned. You are welcome to copy any of them and print them. Mine can be found in posts 70,78,79,82,and 114. It is a long thread with many posts which mention the old ice rink. Eric was probably the most successful skater in the team, and I have good memories of the fun we had. I do remember Christine. I only recently heard about Brian. The Bristol Ice Rink photo shows Dave Boddington, and I think I have put a Pathe News film link showing a race at Richmond in which Ken Pendry is racing.

Hi Emma, Ask Eric if he remembers Keith Jenney (THE BARON on this Forum) as Phil has said you will see many old faces in the post on this site, hope Eric has a look & YOU CAN POST ANY ADDITIONAL INFO about them?
Please remember me to him,if you look back you will see some pics I posted of Eric on Blackpool Beach with RINGO SMITH & GRAHAM DOWNING PLUS ONE OR TWO OTHERS, who I am sure he will recall.

Come on Eric get posting ,Emma tell your DAD to get all the old rink photos OUT. I am still in touch with Art HAMBIDGE who I am sure Eric will remember & as you can see Phil has posted lots of pic's re the Speed Team. Please get Eric to tell you about what he remembers & lets get more story's from our youth.
