Nice to hear from you, did your skating finish when you got married ? I skated from 1950 to 1967 minus 2 years in RAF and although I skated with my fiancee for 3 years, she didn't want to skate after we got married. Usual question from the regulars in this thread - have you got any photos taken at the Spring Hill Ice Rink ?

did anyone go to bearwood ice rink it was converted from a cinama used to go there between spring hill closing & solihull opening

Yes I went there a couple of times. I got giddy skating in small circles. ;)
I read somewhere that they used the freezing equipment from Spring Hill.

that was m Phil who said that about the ice plant from the old ice rink. The best thing about th at Bearwood rink was the Bar.

hi old mohawk yes you are right about going giddy,apparently The Baron went giddy in the bar! at that time tho it was the only place that allowed hockies till solihull opened & silver blades saw the light. I wonder if anyone has any history of the cinema before it became an ice rink? ps. kept my skates for years through them out recently in case i was silly enough to be tempted back on them, cheers alan

I'd forgotten about Silver Blades not allowing hockey skates when they first opened. When I last skated at Solihull in the 70's, I found out my hockey skates were illegal because they didn't have plastic safety guards on the back of the blades. I had a couple of injuries at Springhill Rink which required visits to A&E. My skates are still in the loft somewhere, and I guess that's where they will stay.

Hi Alan,the WINSOR was aTHEATER before it was converted to the rink. I still have all my skates speed & hockey plus my old hockey kit from what I would say was the best time of my life so many good pals & great times.
Keep your skates ready my be Phil, you & I my meet up one day at Solihull, My son paid for my wife & I to go to see THE SOLIHULL BARONS game for my Birthday back in February .Ho how I missed getting kitted up and going out on the ice for old times sake.
If you guys ever go to Solihull let me know & I will try to make it.

was the springhill ice rink the one around 1959/60 time I went to one but cannot remember where it was great place, was there more than one ice rink in brum around those dates.

yes it was the rink I used to go to nearly killed my self one time, just got a little proficent and came down at some speed couldn't turn went right over the side partition. and I remember the mohawk advertisments and logo now, happy days

So you are another Spring Hill skater after all ! This thread has been 'rambling on' since 2004 as we trip down 'Memory Lane'. There are various photos of the inside of the rink amongst the 200+ posts in the thread and they take me time to find. In the year you mentioned 1959, I entered an outdoor race at a place somewhere to the east of your area - I can't remember exactly where, but 'Swaffham Fen' comes to mind, but I may be wrong. We set out from Brum one frosty morning and drove east in a Volkswagon Beetle. The heats of the event continued during the day but a rapid thaw set in, and by the time of the final, the ice was melting with water 1" deep. I came 3rd and now 'show off' with a pic of the medal I got with the date on it.

the fen name sounds about right to me , great heritage of fen and lode skating here going back to the 16th C, you must have been good to receive that award as the fen-men are considered the best in europe even better than the dutch. I have only lived here from the 70's and the winters are too warm now so that it has nearly died out , great shame.

Hi Phil, just found another name from the past, one of our nextdoor folks I found had the name PERNDRY? It turns out his uncle is the KEN PENDARY you skated with at the old rink, small world what!!

hi keith as you say great to watch skating & recall how great it was, but as i posted earlier i dont want to be tempted back onto the ice, i dont think i'll bounce like i did all those years ago! last time i skated was 1982 took my eldest daughter & some of her freinds to solihull (still confident then) Alan.
 
Hi Phil, yes I did show photos, & he said he would tell his uncle, If I get to see him again (he is moveing house at this time) I will ask if Ken has any photos of the old rink,may be just may be he may have some we have not seen????
You guys keep posting it great to hear from times past spent at the old rink.
 
Hi everyone, my fist visit and post here.

I remember The Rink (not too well) as I didn't go often I spent more time sitting on the ice than standing :Dthis was back in the early 60's when I was at Camden St Senior.

Can't believe I didn't tell you that Lyn. I have put it on the Forum before though, because I was friendly with one of the Mohawk speed skaters. My skating gear is still up the loft.
 
lol maggs..i may have missed that or even forgotton it...:D:D:D i love that pic of the rink...it brings back so many happy memories for me....

My speed skates, hockey skates, and a blade sharpening jig are also up in the loft. I kept a model aeroplane up there for 30 years, and I've got a 1950's reel to reel tape recorder still up there. It's funny how we keep stuff in our lofts - hanging on to our memories ! :)
 
Indeed old Mohawk, is it wise to keep these things I ask myself? Let's face it they will never be used again...well not in my case anyhow. An old boyfriend bought me the ice skates, and he was very special...memories are made of this, as the old song says.
