Spring Road, Tyseley

Can any one help name the factories on Spring Road between Shaftmoor lane and Reddings lane in the early 1960s please. I know of Lucas ,MEM, Deritend Engineering and Clifford Covering. Thanks.

There are vacancies in 1960s newspapers at Smith Brothers Wirewares Ltd, Berry's Electric Ltd, both appear to be listed of Spring Road, Hall Green.

Many memories - Berry’s Electrical- corner of Lyncroft Road - Joseph Lucas - Corner of Springcroft Road -MEM corner of Allcroft Road - they had an underground shelter where I spent most nights until it was bombed in the winter of 1940 - a teenage neighbour grabbed me from my Mom and we escaped and we ran into an entry which ran between Cateswell and Allcroft Road. We were reunited with my Mom and family who thought we had been killed. All these years later that night remains vividly in my mind - especially if I-ever happen to pass Spring Road.

Just below Allcroft Road there was a little general store which was run by Mr & Mrs Cox - they sold most everyday products and next door was a fish and chip shop and behind these shops was an ‘unofficial bookie working from a garden shed - often a queue outside at lunchtime. There was then a pair of semi- detached bought houses - the Coxs lived in one house and the other side was the Ketringhams who ran a hairdressing business from the front room.

I remember some of the shops at the Fox Hollies end of Spring Road . Len Minton greengrocer, Horniblows drapers?, Greens butchers Bowsteads newsagent. Also an off-licence and sweet shop near to the railway bridge

Great memories, Enrico and Pat Hayward.
Robert, just seen your comments about factories, leave this with me for a day or so until I check with my brothers. We grew up in Spring Road 1960 until 1982 Opposit Lucas gates and opposite Dr.Allens surgery, our little house was due for demolition.
Just opposite the train station, there was old Mr.Green's butchers, then the best outdoor in Brum, with beautiful high mahogany counter run by George and Gloria.
There was a little Sunday School right next to the railway bridge.

I'd forgotten about the Railway Mission next to the bridge and there was Fraser the fish and chip shop just along from Greens.

I certainly do remember the fish and chip shop.
Okay, I'm going to be really annoying now and see if anyone can remember this shop - turn left at the top of Spring Road, into Summer Road, past Paynes Shoe repairs and Tylers hardware, a few houses up on the same side there was an old sweet shop, set back off the road. A very elderly little woman run this sweet shop and it really was a gem from the past. We used to buy a stick of barley sugar there. :)

I remember Paynes but nothing around the corner in Summer Road. However I do remember turning right into Shaftmoor Lane where Guest's the barber was. Mr Guest also repaired umbrellas. His assistant Ron Osborne usually cut my hair and, many years and a few house moves later, I ended up living opposite Ron. . By this time he had retired and most of my hair had disappeared

Enrico, I could be wrong, but I think that barbers moved to Stratford Road Sparkhill.

Did anyone go to Yarnfield Road School?

When I came back from evacuation at Burford I went to York Road School until I passed for King Edwards grammar school for girls at Handsworth.
My Mom used to work at Charles Hill in

Cateswell Road

My apologies - M.E.M was on the corner of Spring Road and Reddings Lane and it was the Midland Gear Case that was on the corner of Spring Road and Allcroft Road- we lived next door at number 26,

My Mom used to work at Charles Hill in Cateswell Road - they made coffin handles and coffin furniture and our our fire was frequently started with ornate wooden coffin handles which were covered in purple satin for the Catholic deceased - saved Mom buying bundles of firewood!

Cateswell Road

I seem to remember that Velocette motor cycles were made on the same site as Charles Hill's factory. Also, my less than totally reliable memory places MEM at the corner of Reddings Lane and Olton Boulevard West.
