Sprason family in Furnace Lane, Lozells.

barrie

master brummie
My grandfathers sister, Alice May Oldfield married a man named Sprason, I don't know his first name. They had 3 children, Frank, Alice, and Irene. They lived in Furnace Lane in Lozells. Before Alice May Oldfield married, I believe she lived with a family named Yardley at 37 Lozells Rd, which was, I believe, a florists shop. Any help would be much appreciated.

Barrie.

any idea when they married or any more info that may pinpoint the time line

Thank you John. All I know is that Alice May Oldfield was born in 1892, she was registered in the Mar Qtr of 1893.

Pomgolian. Thank you for that, the Frank Sprason looks promising as one the son of Alice May was named Frank.

thanks Barrie now we have a date to work from as Alice was not born at the time of the 1881 census so prior info just not fit in no wonder I could not find her as I have said before we need as much info as possible

the news is good and definite this time
Alice May Oldfield married Frank W Sprason October quarter 1919. 6d 1004 Aston

Hi John.    Thank you for those.    Irene was an accident, and was a special needs child.  I think she was born sometime around 35/36.   She was roughly the same age as myself, I was born  1935.   Thank you again.

Barrie.

Furnace Ln

Ah the memories!! This picture and others of Furnace Lane on the site stir up memories of being a young boy who between 1963 and 1968 used to walk up and down the lane (or gulley as we called it) from Gladstone Terrace to Cowper Street school. Poor and hard times, but strangely happy! My children don't believe me when told about the toilet being outside down the bottom of the "garden" or no bathroom / hot water etc.
Anyone got any photos of the terraced houses off Furnace Lane / Guildford Street?

I was born in furnace lane lozells ,I remember the sprason family Irene was a special needs she used to push a dolls pram about but always seemed happy but I do know that her mother always had to be with her as she would,nt behave for any one else including her father they lived about 4 doors away from me in a edwarden /victorian terrace I lived in part of a old georgeion house that by then had been converted if you would like to ring me on 0121 358 5244 I could send a drawing of it. which I have found. My father in law who would be 102 now was a close friend and often used to talk about the family he grew up in lennox st. also there was another family next door to them with a differnt name but where related just can not think of it now but I can get it off my own mother when I see her I hope you find this help full I am trying to trace the history of my own house in furnace lane as it was such a grand house with lots of history.I was born in 1949.
good luck Margaret Gamwell

Hello Barrie

Doubt it will help but you never know, we have a Sprason. (Not a name I had come accross before.

Harry Alfred Sheldon (Chandelier Maker) married Gertrude Sprason in the first quarter of 1888. They had a son James Richard in 1890. Gertude was born in 1868 in Birmingham Aston Manor St George.

In the 1891 census they were living at 16 number 2 Court Great Russel Street.

Gertrude had siblings Samuel and Alice M. and was the daughter of Richard Sprason b1831 and Sarah b1835. Richard was a German Silver Caster and Sarah a Miliner.

Cheers
