I am researching the Southam family history, based in the Jewellery Quarter from 1871. Joseph Hall Southam's wife Mary Ellen died in 1879 but what happened after that is unknown. Their children listed in the 1881 census went into the Cottage Home for Pauper Children of the Birmingham Workhouse at Marston Green, but neither Joseph Hall or his mother Mary Ann who lived with them can, as yet, be traced. If anyone has come across records of people who worked in the Jewellery Quarter or the names above I would be very gratefull.:)

Very likely not the one you're looking for, but does seem to stand out as there is not another Joseph Southam in Kellys directory 1873 till this one in 1883 just after he disappeared:
1883
Southam, Joseph , Swan Vaults, 53 High St deritend
1884-1888
Southam, Sarah Ann(Mrs.),Swan Vaults,53 High st. Deritnd
She then took over the Ryland Arms, but was listed as "Southan".

Re: Joseph Hall Southam

Henry,
I have a brief note of a branch of the Southam family living in Deritend.
namely: Edward Southam whose children were Lilian (born abt 1890) Edward (born abt 1900) and Florence (DOB U/k) Lilian married into the Darnley family in 1912. Hope this is not too much of a red herring.
Will.

Re: Joseph Hall Southam

:) Many thanks to all who replied to my posting. The other branch of the family most likely come from Joseph's brother Henry. Joseph Hall and his mother Mary Ann (nee Hall) of 13 Wilton Street (in 1881) are the ones who my brain cell is focused on along with his children in the 1880's. It is interesting how people can disappear from public records so easily.

Re: Joseph Hall Southam

Hi Henry. I just stumbled upon your posting and hope that I am not too late to be of some help. I am researching all Southam's and have quite a bit of data on Joseph Hall Southam and his family. Use the following link to see my data at RootsWeb:

https://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=george_southam&id=I574

I am in the midst of updating my files so you will find that it is not complete but it should help you.

Sincerely,
Bernie

Re: Joseph Hall Southam

Hi Bernie
that must have taken some time to pull together!!
I can add some info to this. I will email you later this week or more likely at the weekend on your Southam email - thanks for getting in touch. Out of interest which Southam line are you descended from?? Thanks Jo

I must have moved or renamed my database as the the link that I supplied to it does not work anymore. Here is a new link to Joseph Southam (1815-1858) and his family (which includes Joseph Hall Southam and his brother Henry Southam).

Please let me know if it does not work.

Re: Joseph Hall Southam

Any data that you would like to pass my way would be greatly appreciated. You can obtain my email address from RootsWeb. I have been working on a "one name" study of the surname "Southam" for about 20 years and since I retired 8 years ago, I have been doing it full time. I am currently updating the database for my line of Southam's and have just passed the 12,000 record level. Here is a link to my father in my line of Southam's.

Cheers,
Bernie Southam
