At Sorrento Maternity Hospital, the forerunner of the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) was the first dedicated unit for premature and vulnerable newborns in Britain and Dr. Mary (Vickie) Crosse inspired Dr Beryl Corner to set up the second such unit in the UK at Southmead Hospital in Bristol in 1946.
