Hi everyone
I've hit a real dead end with my tree research. I cannot find, try as i might my grandads older brother. The bad news is i have no idea of a date of birth. All i know is his name is William. Can anyone help me at all? My great grandparents are Ernest Smith b1881 and Leah Ashford b1884 they were married on 27 Sept 1903. My grandad Samuel Arthur was born at 233 Great Russell Street on 30th May 1907. Between their marriage and Sam's birth William was born but i cant find him. It's important to me because we've lost all links with William so im unaware if he married or had children. My dad says he can vaguely remember an auntie rose, so maybe he married a Rose? Can anyone help me... please?

Re: Aaarggh its those darned Smiths again!

Okay, sleuth time!
I have found two marriages which may fit - you will have to see if the certificates have the correct parents for William.

William H Smith and Rose Mallaby, 2nd quarter 1924, Birmingham volume 6d page 12a.
William H Smith and Rose B Taberer, 3rd quarter 1922 Kings Norton vol 6d p 19.
Just coincidence they both have H as middle initial!

Birth registers before 1911 don't have mother's maiden names, so it's needles in haystacks time. There are 30+ William Smith births registered in Birmingham in the 1903-7 period.
However in 2nd quarter 1914 there is a William Smith MMN Ashford registered Birmingham, vol 6d p 525.

Re: Aaarggh its those darned Smiths again!

thanks lloyd... i'll check those out. This can sometimes be a frustrating game cant it? What were my relatives thinking being called Smith? Can't believe my dad... he only went and married a Smith too! Double the trouble!

Re: Aaarggh its those darned Smiths again!

lloyd just a quicky... are those the only william smiths marrying a rose in the 20's? I just asked my dad and he doesn't recognise the surnames taberer or mallaby... he seems to remember webb, webley or webber but he's not sure

Yes, they were. Rose may not have been her first name though...leaves the field wide open.

Re: Aaarggh its those darned Smiths again!

No William Smith to Webb / Webley / Webber in this area, sorry. (Looked 1918-1930)
