One interesting possibility I've come across while looking at Edward's children is that one of his sons, Alfred, may have ended up living in Kenilworth (1911).

If it is him he was listed as a billiard scorer at the Grand Hotel (1871), then a barman (1881) and finally a PH manager (1891 & 1901). Also in 1901 and 1911 he is listed with a Caroline Oliver Morton (nee Horsfall) and in 1891 as a servant of her sister.

Their family came from Kenilworth and I've been trying to see if there is connection between them and Esther Oliver but nothing so far, and as I'm not really sure if it is the correct Alfred (he doesn't marry) it may just be one of those strange coincidences.

One other thing is that when Caroline and her sister die the man listed in their probate is a John Wilkinson.

I think that William met Esther Oliver, who he married in 1858, in Hatton where his family still lived. On the 1851 census in Hatton Hill, living next door to the man I assume to be William’s brother, Thomas Smith (Jr.) was an 11 year-old Esther Oliver, who is recorded as being ‘daughter-in-law’ to the head of the household. I imagine this actually meant step-daughter. William’s father and mother, Thomas and Hannah, lived just a few doors away also.

The meeting was probably a little more closer than just living close to family.

Esther Oliver's step father Thomas Harris was the father of Harriet, who married William's brother Edward, who as mentioned previously were witnesses when William and Esther married.

So put simply William and Edward married step sisters.

It's amazing what you can find out when you start looking.

I noticed that the Wells name was passed down as a given name in the Cantrills for at least 5 generations. I found that interesting, I had a similar thing with the name Austin.

Thanks so much. Yes, the Wells middle name helped immensely in tracking the right individuals. One of them, Charles Wells Cantrill, was an apprenticed watch maker who emigrated with his wife to Liverpool. They began a Liverpool dynasty in which the Wells middle name was used for several generations too. The Elizabeth Wells who gave her name to her descendants must have been a formidable or very respected individual.
