Re: ruth smith 1911

Hello,

I've found the parents and as you say they're living alone. And I could only find 2 Ruth Smiths, one living in the household of Daniel Smith at 12 Galton St and listed as daughter, and the other living in the household of Thomas Attwood at house 2 court 24 Bissell St and again listed as daughter.

So is there another Ruth Smith or is she one of those 2 and the record is wrong in some way?

i have the feeling that she may be the one with the attwoods but have no connection that i know of

Re: ruth smith 1911

Zena, I would try to find a connection between any of the people in the 2 couples
Thomas Attwood was married to Ruth Emma Pratt.

It would appear that Ruth Smith may be 'adopted' if this was the case she would still have her birth certificate because adoption was not legalised until 1927.
Most of the what we believe are adoptions were conducted through solicitors who issued a 'Treaty' to the new 'parents'
My Dad was 'adopted ' this way by his aunt, I have the Treaty but he kept his birth name.

Alternatively children were just taken in by relatives or friends and often took their surname,

I see that Samuel and Alice are childless on the 1911 but state that they had 2 children . 1 still living.
