I am looking for information on the ancestors of Lillian Louise smith, b1910 in B'ham. m John William carter. daughter of thomas charles smith and Louisa Cotterell. I have zero info on Cotterell and hope someone can help me.
Thanks, alisan

There is a birth registered of a Louisa Cotterell in Birmingham, 2nd quarter 1873, Vol 6d page 75.

Thanks a lot of this, Lloyd. However, I have no idea what 'Birmingham, 2nd quarter' etc means. I live in Africa nad just found this webpage at the weekend. what does the birth say? Sorry i am so ignorant. alisan

OK, this is how I understand the system.
Births, Marriages and Deaths are registered, and the brief details of these 'entries into a register' are recorded by quarters of a year in a separate register, a sort of index I suppose.
These entries are what are referred to: so 'birth registered Birmingham, 2nd quarter 1873, Vol 6d page 75.' means that in Volume 6d, on Page 75 are references to all births registered in the months of April May and June 1873. Birmingham district is not the whole city - just the district, others are 'Aston' and 'Kings Norton' which cover a larger area than the postal districts.
From the reference the register office can trace and issue a copy of the original certificate (sometimes direct copies, sometimes new certificates with the information transcribed from the original) if you want one.
Here is a picture of the entry for 2nd quarter 1873, part of the page. I've put red dots to show the reference.

Thomas Charles Smith married Louisa Cotterell
Birmingham June 1905 reference 6d 129

For those living abroad a simple way to order the certificate is to use site
www.gro.gov.uk

You can order online and pay by credit card.

The certificate will have the age of Thomas and Louisa their addresses and the name and occuption of their fathers.
After that it should be quite easy to trace your ancestry back and any of us on the forum would be pleased to help you.
Alberta.

You are all very kind. Thanks for helping me. I am very new to all this and it is encouraging to benefit from your (pl) experience. Alisan
