Brummie babby
Hi, this is my first post and I am not a Brummie so please forgive my ignorance. I am researching a couple of Smethwick lads who served in the Second World War and I believe that it was part of Birmingham at the time. I have an address for one of the lads which I cannot find in the modern A to Z. It looks like Annesley or Annerley Road, Smethwick. 40.
I am hoping that some kind soul with local knowledge might point me in the right direction. Thanks in anticipation.

If you give us their names someone will search the online bham electoral rolls for you but they only go up to 1950. I can only find one instance of an Annsley Rd, Smethwick and that's for a James Bayliss.

I found an Annesley St Smethwick in 1947 map R H side of the park

Thank you. I am really grateful to each of you for your posts and the fantastic information in them. To have a map, photograph and offer of a look-up from my first post is much more than I could have imagined. The two families I am looking for are
DAVIS of 13, Auckland Road, Smethwick
ELIAS of 8, Annesley Road, Smethwick.

Thanks once again. You have made my day. Sue

Apologies for the omission. I should have added that the families were known to be at the addresses given at the time of the Second World War. I realize that there would be no Electoral Registers during the war years but a look-up before or after would be very much appreciated. Sue

I have had a quick look and can't see any Davis at 13 Auckland Rd nor any Elias at Annersley Rd. Do you have their first names?

Suzanne

Hi Suzanne. The lads themselves would not have been old enough to vote but I believe that Tom Davis' parents were Harold T Davis and Ethel. I also think, although I am by no means certain, that I am looking for David S and Alice E Elias. Regards. Sue

Sorry Sue no luck I'm afraid at Auckland or Annesley. Maybe someone else might have another look as I may have missed them.

Do you have a CD of the electoral rolls or something?. I ask as when i put Auckland road into the online rolls i just get the Sparkbrook one, and Annesley only gives me two mentions of it as a secondary address. This makes it seem that they weren't in birmingham and therefore aren't online

Hi Saddler

You would need to contact Smethwick library to view the electoral rolls for that area.

I'll IM you with what I assume to be the Davis and Elias families.

Thanks for your efforts which have been helpful. I will visit Smethwick Archives to look at their Electoral Registers. Regards Sue

Wondered who you were looking for as my mom was brough up in Annesley Road.

Hi and thanks for responding to my post. The man I am interested in finding more about is Francis David Elias, a bricklayer who lived at 8, Annnesley Road. He got married to Elsie Vera May Smith from that address in September 1950. Anything your Mom might know about him or the family would be very much appreciated. Regards Sue

I have found a note in the London Gazette 24th February 2011 Headed HIGHWAYS ACT 1980 Proposed stopping up of former Annesley Street, Smethwick. However I cannot access the full text of this notice which presumably is issued by Sandwell Metropolitan District Council. Why a reference to "former" if it still exists? and if it does not exist why are they now wishing to stop it up?

I have checked with Snadwell metropolitan Borough and can now tell you where Annesley Street was situated. This is the note I have had from them
On the Council's historical mapping records there is a road named Annesley Road that was "Stopped Up" in 1994. The short road extended south-east from Exeter Road approximately 25 metres south-west of the current residential street of Jordan Close, almost exactly opposite the junction with Tiverton Road.

I have marked in red where I think the street would be from the directions
