Small Heath

Hi everyone,

I am researching the location of 5/67 St. Andrew Road. Small Heath. Which was demolished in 1975. Can you please help me to locate the street exactly.

Does anyboby have images or maps of the area c.1970's

Thanks.

Hi bandito22

No. 67 St Andrews Road (a draper's shop) was approximately where I've put a red asterisk on the map below. Although there was a 5/67, from your description of turning left to face the Blues' ground, I can't imagine this is the correct address.

Many Thanks.

It seems from the research that MikeJee has done, comparing directories and maps that my proximity to the ground must be incorrect.

Marked on this map in red is the terrace corresponding to our address. Any pictures of maps arounf the 1970's much appreciated.

Thanks to all who have helped so far.

I lived in Cattell Road between the Atlas and Arsenal St. Maybe I can help someone as I knew the streets pretty well

I'm not sure how to get going, I'm brand new. I am interested in the postings about coleman St. Can anyone help me get a plan of the houses on Coleman Street? My Grandfather lived at 1/30. I am looking for info about the people who lived in the back houses of number 32. Any help would be appreciated

I think that's a modern map, and its showing St Andrews Street

Hi,

I think this is completely correct location. It is the same area MikeJee suggested.

I have had a look on Google Streets and the images are attached.

If the industial buildings on the right were similar in the 1970's tht would explain why I remember a big brick wall being there which I thought was the football ground... maybe?? And the actual ground is not as far from there as it looked on the maps.

One thing I definitely remembered was that I could see the Rotunda clock/temerature sign from my bedroom window. In the second picture looking over the uilding, the rotunda comes into view as I remembered.

So, if this is the location, it looks like someone built a leather sofa outlet on my old terrace which is amusing as we never had a sofa! For the record, we also had no bath and only an outside loo! :crying:

So if there are any pictures/maps and especially plans from c.1900 to c.1975 for this location, please post them.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have overlayed the 1902 map, as best I can, with a current map for those who may be interested in their own house history.

If the evidence is correct as to where my house was (and I think it is pretty good evidence) it can be seen in the red patch of houses.

Counting from the road I think my house was either just inside what is now a sofa outlet (maybe I could sit on their sofa in my old front room. :D). Or it's just outside where the tree/bush is now.

Special thanks to MikeJee for the amazing detail.

As I have said before, any photo's, plans or maps gratefully received.

Thanks.

You are correct, I have transcripts of Ada Road school registers and there a addresses given as 10/68, and 2/5 St Andrews Rd.
Nick
Hi brummie nick, I see that you have transcripts of Ada Rd school. Do they go back to about 1917 into the 20's as I think my mother and her siblings went there? They lived in Watery Lane. It would be very interesting if you have. Thank you very much,
Sheri

Hi Sheri, sorry, but the few that I have are for the senior boys, and start in the late forties,
Your Mother would have attended the Ada Rd Juniors School, which I do have a photo of if you’re interested.
Nick

Hi N ick, thank you for your reply - I thought that would be the case as early records would have destroyed long ago. I would love to see a photo - it's interesting to see where mother walked as I never had the chance to see where she was brought up.

Studying Mikejee's early map and comparing the layout with the 1945 electoral register, plus 1974 Kelly's directory, the lower end of St Andrew's Road does not appear to have altered much - if at all.

1945
House Nos. 21-35
1/35 to 7/35
Gladstone Terrace 1-15
37
1/37 to 18/37
39-51
1/51 to 8/51
Whitby Place 1-10
53
1/53 to 18/53
55-67
1/67 to 7/67
Lime Grove 1-12
69
1/69 to 13/69
71-75
1/75 to 4/75
77-191
1 and 2/191
Church Grove 1-12
Church Terrace 1-8
193-197
1 and 2/197
199-251

Hope this works

Thanks for the research but all of your numbers do not make any sense to me. I have only just realised that the 'back of 67' meant the main St. Andrews road had a number 67 and there was a terrace behind there known as 'back of 67' as well as having its own terrace name. Could you explain what your numbers mean?

Thanks.

bandito22

Fairly straightforward. The south-west side of St Andrew's Road was numbered from 1 to 251 (odds). Groves, terraces etc leading off had their own numbers and there were usually also gulleys/entryways leading to the 'back-of' houses.

67 was a 'front house' number and had 7 houses to it's rear.

Note: some 'Places' etc were often part of front houses in small blocks. This may or may not have been the case with St Andrew's Road.

Studying Mikejee's map, it's tempting to conclude that the block of 7 houses you have marked red contains 5/67.

I lived in St Andrews Road 16 back of 37 to be exact near the football ground

Hi Janet s

I lived at no.92 between 1928 and 1938.

You may remember Amison's the butchers on the corner of St Andrew's Road and Watery Lane? This pic is from the early 50's and I would guess the first house shown here would be about no.21.

Thanks for the pic. I don't remember whether that butcher was still there in my era but i'm sure most of it would have been the same before the bulldozers came in the early 1970's.

Shame there's just a horrible petrol station there now. Is that progress?? I think not! :(

Do you have any more pics?? Please Post. Thanks.

the alley as you remember it were called entrys and the back doors to the front were in most entries and the entry,s lead into yards where the toilets were, which were shared betwen two houses and also had the brew house,s (wash houses) which had designated days for each house, in our particular yard there were 5 houses, and three front houses we we were fortunate to have a straight thro house as the front was a sweet shop all houses in the yard wer known as for instance 1/93 herbert rd and the name of the terrace was above the lower windows but seems a bit ostentatious to use seeing as we had no indoor plumbing except for cold water tap.

Bandito, if you were born in St Andrew's Road then you were probably christened in the local church of the same name.

Heres another one, funny I dont remember there being a steeple.

Health and Safety people would love this.

Thanks for the pics. I was not christened but I did go to Sunday School somewhere. Not sure if it was here as it doesn't ring any bells (no pun intended).

I also went to nursery or infants somewhere nearby any ideas or pictures?

Thanks.

I would have thought probably one of these, or Ada Rd, but I'm not sure if there was an infants there or not.

Thanks for the pics, pretty sure it's Tilton Road. I remembered some railings on my left as I walked home and that pic is the exact right era 1973 (I was 3!). Think I went there when I was 4 or 5 years old.

More pics please of this area please.

Hi Everyone,

Many thanks to all those who have helped me piece together this part of my life in 1970's Small Heath.

Here are a collection of images that I have found since this post began. Hopefully look familiar to many, even if it was not the actual street you lived in, they should evoke some memories of those times. :)

The re-development of this area effectively bacame the playground for children of my age. so I hope they bring back some memories. They are named (according to the source) to reflect the area and year.

Please continue to post more Small Heath images.

Regards.

Icarus and Col H, thanks for the photos of St Andrews Church. My Great Grandfather was married there in 1874 and despite searches I've never found any images of the Church.
It must have been that marriage that started me off on the life-long journey of misery that IS a Blues supporter!:D

Hello, you wouldn't by any chance be able to do a scan of same map but to show garrison lane / venitia road? I grew up there (at 302 Garrison Lane) in the early 60's and a map would bring back memories.
