This is an extract from the Birmingham Post dated January 22nd 1870. It is written exactly as it appears in the paper.

Situations Wanted to bakers wanted as situation apply J Jennings Burbury Street.

I am a little puzzled as to the wording of this advert as it is in situations wanted and not situations vacant.
My gt grandfather was John Jennings who had a large shop and bakery in Burbury Street why would he be asking for situations wanted? He did not retire until after 1891. I would be interested what others make of this.:)

"Are situations wanted by out-of-work bakers? If so, please apply to J Jennings, Burbury Street" .... is all that comes to mind. David

Sounds good to me David maybe he was trying another avenue to attract employee's. Thanks for the quick reply.

Situations : Wanted
Bakers wanted to fill a situation (job; post; position), please apply to J Jennings, Burbury Street ...... another rendering.
I'm off to bed now; we're an hour ahead of you. Best wishes, David

I think it was a way of getting a good employee - you only got the people applying who were clever enough to understand the advert (I wouldn't of applied):D

Hello John yes this is what Dave said and I am more inclined to think this is the case. His business seemed to be prospering and expanding around this time. He had two other shops as well but I suppose Burbury Street was the head office so to speak.
