A statement from his wife and two children says he "passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today following a short illness, surrounded by his family".

My husband comes from Middlesbrough and we used to drive up to visit his family before Christmas every year and Chris Rea would always be playing on the car radio. Brings back lots of memories. RIP Chris.
