sillitoe family

A lot of circumstantial evidence suggest it could be.

As she has passed away, the op could request to have the entry unblanked. I don't think it costs anything to request this, so no loss if it isn't her.

yes mark original poster can have names unblocked think the only thing they have to do is provide proof of death..ie death certificate but that needs checking as i could be wrong

Hi all,

Thank you for letting me join
My parents are Lawrence (Larry) Yates and Ann Yates nee Sillitoe they met and married in the Harborne/Smethwick region in the 1970s the are from Joseph (Joe) Yates nee Iafrati/yafrati from the Italian quarters Joe had multiple siblings, my great Aunt Marina moved to Alaska we have reconnected. Joe married Hilda Yates nee Smith who ran a hair dressers in Harborne. My brother and I have run DNA tests and both got different results from who Joes parents were so would love to clear that up. Ok my mum's side we have Samuel James Sillitoe (Jim) and Ethel Sue Sillitoe nee Smith (sue). Sue was taken in by family as her mum died during child birth, we have been unable to travel her family. Jim's dad was James Sillitoe who married Polly Prince they had another child Edie. James died when Jim was about 8 and Polly took to her bed and never did anything until the day she died. We know they were cousins and it was a huge scandal but I'd love to understand that more.

A few things.

Firstly and simplest, the name of your great aunt who moved to Alaska was Georgina Kathleen Yafrati, one of Joseph's 5 sisters.

Secondly, Samuel James and Polly Prince were half cousin. Pollie's mother appears to have been an elder illegitimate half sister of his before her mother married Samuel's father and had him.

And finally and more complicated, Joseph Yafrati...

There is a birth reg. for a Joseph Yafrati in Bham Dec qtr 1912, son of an Anthony Yafrati & a Lucy D'Ambrosio (Ambrose). There also appears to be a death reg. for him the following year.

However, on the 1921 census & 1939 register Anthony & Lucy are listed with a son named Joseph (amongst other children). Also his dob is consistent with the birth reg. of 1912.

What this means I don't know. It could be that the death reg. is a mistake or for someone else or that they 'adopted' a child and renamed him Joseph. If you've had some anomalies with your dna test it may be the latter.

Purchasing the birth and death certificates of Joseph may help but I don't. It appears you can buy a digital copy for both which is only £3 each, so not a great expense.

Assuming Joseph Yafrati was indeed the son of Antony then his grandfather, Vincenzo, appears to been convicted of attacking and seriously injuring another Italian, a Giovanni Farina, with a chopper for supposedly making suggestive comments to his wife.

This occurred in Jan 1908 but if he was convicted then, despite the seriousness of the crime, his sentence was no more than 3 years because he appears on the 1911 census with his wife and son.

Found "not guilty".
Will post article when I have my laptop on unless someone else does so in the meantime
