Shops on the Corner of College Road and Brackenbury Road Kingstanding

Can anyone help me with the name of a shop please in Kingstanding / Perry Common ?.

When I was a child my Mom used to send me to the shops by the Island on the corner of College Road and Brackenbury Road. The shop which faced the College Road was a fairly big newsagent and grocers called "Richards" and was owned by the same family for many years. On the back of that shop facing the Brackenbury road was another very small shop which was eventualy bought by the Richards's and became part of their shop, but was originaly an independently owned shop.

My Mom used to send me to get certain items from Richards and would tell me to get other items from the other shop which I think she used to call "Wallies" but I am not sure. I think she did this because she felt sorry for the owner of the smaller shop and wanted to give him some business.

Can anyone remember these two shops, ans was the small one called "Wallies" as I think ?
 
I had a paper round at Richards in the 70's, don't recall another shop then....... The shop gave us christmas cards for us to deliver from 'your paperboy' each year.

Hi Kevkonk,

I think Richards had taken it over by the 70,s but it was definately another small shop independent of Richards in the 60's. When Richards took it over they put a fence in front of it so it could not be seen from Brackenbury Road. I assume they used it as storage because it was a small shop compared with Richards but it was a bit of an Aladins cave as I recall !.
 
I worked at Richards on College rd in the 70's, I was a Saturday girl. The shop next door was brought by Robert and his wife and turned into a house, although If I remember rightly they kept the downstairs as a storeroom for many years. Not sure what sort of shop it was before they brought it.
 
On the back of Richards shop in Brackenbury Road there was a little shop called Edwards Greengrocers.
Then it was sold to George harris and his wife Nell they died and their daughter Floss took over the shop with husband Wall.
They sold it to Richards in abt 1972 and shut it down and made into a house.
Robert the son of Bill Hudson who was manager at Richards went to live in the house.

Thanks Carolann you have answered my questions, mom used to refer to Wally but called the shop Edwards I remember now you have put it in print.

Hi, Just to confirm my Grandfather George Harrison and my Grandmother Nellie ran the shop,then handed it over to my auntie Floss and uncle Wally.Floss and Wally are still going strong and I saw them a few weeks ago.My Mom and Dad Also George looked after the shop on occasions and I remember spending xmas there also.

It was my grandfather Robert and his brother, Ron, that had richards greengrocers, Robert died 35yrs ago, they also had other shops in the area, aldridge road, queslett road, lambeth road, any info would be welcome, especially pics, thanks

I used to know a young lady who was related to Robert, her family lived in Sudbury grove Kingstanding. I seem to remember Robert knew Billy Fury back in the sixties,or it may have been Billy J Cramer.
 
They were Bill and May Thompson and their Daughter was called Pauline. Bill passed away mid sixties and I lost contact during 67.
 
thankyou nickcc101 for the information, Robert Richards wife was Phyllis, and they had three children, Michael, Ann and Peter, both Ann and Peter have passed away. they moved to Cornwall '59/60 but retained the shops, and a Mr Tucker was employed to keep an eye on things. I think most of the shops were taken over by Dillons over the years?
